The Institute of Fluid Dynamics (IFD) at ETH Zurich ( http://www.ifd.mavt.ethz.ch/ ) offers fellowships for graduate studies leading to a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Topics of research in the areas of computational fluid dynamics, include :

  • Implementation of parallel and neuro-computing methods (e.g. genetic algorithms, neural nets) for the simulation, modeling and control of fluid flows.
  • Development of adaptive numerical methods for the simulation of unsteady flows in complex geometries, such as those involving Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems(MEMS) devices.

The projects involve access to state of the art computational facilities and extensive collaboration and travel for visits with scientists at the Center for Turbulence Research at NASA Ames/Stanford University.

Highly qualified candidates are sought with a background in engineering, mathematics, physics, computational sciences and other relevant areas. Applicants should submit :

  1. A curriculum vitae, including a list of three references
  2. Original transcripts of undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) studies.
  3. A statement of their research interests (maximum two pages).

Candidates are encouraged to submit their scores in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test.

The fellowships carry a yearly stipend of approximately 55,000 SFr and graduate students enjoy all benefits of the ETH federal employees.

Applications for studies beginning in the Summer Semester 1998 or the Winter Semester 1998 are being reviewed periodically, starting December 1st, 1997.
