[03] STATE SETS UP PRE-FABRICATED HOMES FOR QUAKE SURVIVORSWeb Posted: 19:43 GMT+2Athens, 19/09/1999 (MPA) The Minister of Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Costas Laliotis stated today that work was proceeding on providing housing for an estimated 50,000 people left homeless by the September 7 earthquake in the Attica region.Mr. Laliotis said that 130 settlements would be established in the Metamorphosi area in some 15 days for the use of the area's homeless. In eight to 10 weeks, Mr. Laliotis added, the ministry will have established 4,000 settlements of pre-fabricated homes in all the areas hit by the quake. The Sept. 7 quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and killed 139 people; most were killed when buildings, including factories and high-rise apartment buildings, collapsed. [04] DEFENSE MINISTERS OF GREECE AND CYPRUS RECONFIRM PACTWeb Posted: 19:43 GMT+2Athens, 19/09/1999 (MPA) Greece and Cyprus reconfirmed their joint defense policy yesterday, during discussions held between Greek Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos and his Cypriot counterpart Sokratis Hasikou, in Athens.The two ministers focused on the further support of the existing security and defense policies and the European prospect of Cyprus, which is one of the candidate European Union members-states, while they also discussed cooperation in military training and equipment. [05] GREEK CHILDREN AMONG WORLD'S FATTEST, ACCORDING TO SURVEYWeb Posted: 19:43 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 19/09/1999 (MPA) Greek children are among the fattest in the world, according to the results of a survey revealed at Thessaloniki pan-European conference on obesity.According to the study of children aged 13 from eightcountries around the world, Greek children, and particularly girls, had the highest body mass of all. They were followed by children from Kuwait, the U.S., Germany, Finland, Holland, Kenya and Thailand. A Greek-based study meanwhile, showed that four in 10 Greek children below the age of 10 were overweight, with girls more obese than boys`their age. Experts say this bodes ill for adult health as childhood obesity is a signpost to adult obesity and an indicator of a range of adult illnesses. [06] SEVENTH PERSON DIES FROM FALCON AIR TRAGEDYWeb Posted: 19:43 GMT+2Athens, 19/09/1999 (MPA) Cameraman Panayiotis Poulos, 52, who was seriously injured in the plane accident that claimed the life of Alternate Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis and five other people earlier this week, succumbed to his injuries this afternoon.Mr. Poulos died of heart failure shortly before 1 p.m., doctors at the Athens General State Hospital said. His condition had been listed as critical since the accident on Tuesday evening which occurred as the Falcon jet prepared to land in Bucharest. The plane plummeted thousands of feet, killing six people immediately - Mr. Kranidiotis and his 23-year-old son, a bodyguard, two journalists and the flight engineer. Still hospitalized and listed as critical is Mr. Kranidiotis' diplomatic office director Grigoris Papadopoulos, who is suffering from cranial injuries. [07] SCHOOL YEAR GETS OFF TO A BAD START AFTER LENGTHY DELAYSWeb Posted: 19:43 GMT+2Athens, 19/09/1999 (MPA) The earthquake that devastated the Attica region on September 7, has had a profound effect on the region's schools, as many of the school buildings were damaged by the tremor, resulting in postponing the new academic year by more ten days.While the majority of schools will open tomorrow, Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis conceded that a series of obstacles still need to be overcome. Nevertheless, he expressed his confidence that this year will not be marked by teacher of student mobilizations and added that the shortage in teaching staff will be covered by new hires who will be selected in the spring. [B] WORLD[08] GREEK FM IN NEW YORK, HAS SERIES OF CONTACTSWeb Posted: 19:43 GMT+2New York, 19/09/1999 (MPA) Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who is presently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, is to have a series of meeting during his stay, starting with his Turkish counterpart Ismael Cem and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.He will also meet with Russian Foreign Minster Igor Ivanov and his counterparts from the European Union. The talks will focus on the developments in Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, as well as Turkey's European course.
