    [01] UNEMPLOYMENT IN GREEE IS ON THE RISE

    Athens, 18/09/1999 (MPA) An unemployment increase is being recorded in Greece. According to a European Commission report that was made public yesterday, unemployment in Greece was 11.7% in 1998 compared to 9.6% in 1997.

    On the contrary, in the rest European Union states the percentage of the unemployed has dropped to 10.1% from 10.7%.

    [02] THE MAYOR OF ISTANBUL WILL BE IN ATHENS TOMORROW

    Athens, 18/09/1999 (MPA) Mayor of Istanbul Ali Mufit Giurtuna is expected in Athens tomorrow to express his solidarity to the victims of the earthquake that hit the Greek capital earlier in the month.

    Athens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos had visited Istanbul on August 25 and his initiatives had offered considerable help to the victims of the monster earthquake of 7.4 on the Richter scale that hit Turkey on August 17 killing thousands of people and causing extensive damages.

    [03] AFTERSHOCK MEASURING 3.8 IN ATHENS

    Athens, 18/09/1999 (MPA) An aftershock measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale was recorded in Athens last night and came from the same epicenter that gave the devastating earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale that hit Athens on September 7.

    According to seismologists, the aftershock activity recorded is normal.

    [04] GIORGOS PAPANDREOU WILL ATTEND THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING

    Athens, 18/09/1999 (MPA) The course of the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus problem are at the center of the meetings Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will have in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting.

    Mr. Papandreou, who left yesterday for the United States, will meet with UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, US secretary of state Madeleine Albright and Turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem as well as with other European and NATO officials.

    [05] THE "BLACK BOX" OF THE ILL-FATED FALCON IS BEING EXAMINED IN GERMANY

    Athens, 18/09/1999 (MPA) The "black box" of the ill-fated Falcon is being examined in Germany, while the special inquiry to determine the causes of the air tragedy that resulted to the deaths of deputy foreign minister Yiannos Kranidiotis, his son, two reporters, a flight mechanic and a police officer, continues.

    The two pilots of the Falcon in their testimonies stated that there was a failure in the automatic pilot system. The head of the prosecutor's office in Athens has ordered an urgent investigation on the case to determine if there are any political responsibilities.

    Meanwhile, state television network, ERA, cameraman Panagiotis Poulos and Yiannos Kranidiotis' diplomatic office director Grigoris Papadopoulos who were injured during the freak accident are still hospitalized in a critical condition.

    [06] PASKAL MILO TO MPA: THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND ALBANIA ARE EXCELLENT

    Tirana, 18/09/1999 (MPA) The relations between the United States and Albania are excellent stated to MPA Albanian foreign minister Paskal Milo, who leaves today for New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, on the sidelines of which he will meet with US secretary of state Madeleine Albright.

    Mr. Milo stated to MPA that the postponement of visits to Albania by US officials is not due to the lack of security in the country or because there is fear for possible terrorist attacks, as certain Albanian newspapers maintain, and stated characteristically that many representatives of the international community had visited the country in the period 1997- 1999.

    On the role Albania is being called to play in the Balkans, Mr. Milo stated that the priority of the country's foreign policy is the establishment of excellent relations with the neighboring states.

    [07] THE NEW ARCHBISHOP OF AMERICA IS ENTHRONED TODAY

    New York, 18/09/1999 (MPA) The new Archbishop of America Dimitrios is enthroned today in a ceremony that will be held in New York's Holy Trinity church.

    The enthronement ceremony and the formal dinner that will follow will be attended by US first lady Hilary Clinton, the governor of New York, US Senators and House Representatives. Also present will be Cypriot Republic president Glafkos Clerides and Greek undersecretary of foreign affairs Grigoris Niotis.
