  • [01] Measures to Resolve Prison Overcrowding

    New regulations, promoted by the Justice Ministry providing for the release of 5.500 prisoners till April, 2009 the latest, are expected to resolve overcrowding in 14 of the 33 prisons nationwide. Exempted from prison release are drug traffickers of large quantities and those convicted for hideous crimes. In the meantime, the prisoners' committee announced suspension of mass hunger strike on Thursday after 18 days and called on the Justice Minister to materialize his commitments. There are 12.315 prisoners today while capacity of Greek prisons is about 8243 people. The prisoners; announcement says that the draft bill is a first step as a result of the prisoners struggle and the society's solidarity but it does not resolve basic problems.

    [02] Rehab Clinic Hires Clairvoyant

    The administration of a Norwegian drug addicts' rehabilitation clinic hired a clairvoyant after some of the patients experienced strange phenomena in the building, the Oslo newspaper Dagbladet reported. An employee of the clinic, Harald Ronning said the first strange experience was reported in September 2007. "Since then others have complained. The experiences were very unpleasant - presences in rooms that could not be explained, being touched physically, sounds, and things that fell inexplicably." The clairvoyant, Lilli Bendriss, has appeared on a TV program called "The Power of Spirits" said that the clinic's administration had hired a special counselor.
