    An unsettled day with showers and storms is forecast in all parts of the country. Winds northerly, light to moderate. Temperatures in Athens will range between 20C and 28C; and in Thessaloniki between 19C and 27C.

    Gradual improvement of the weather is expected from Thursday.

    [02] Mass boycott on goods and services today

    Outraged about soaring prices , consumer groups have urged the public to boycott the market today, refusing to buy goods and services , turn off power switches and not make any telephone calls from 10 pm . The transport workers union called on commuters not to pay for tickets on public transport between the hours of 3 to 4 pm. According to the president of the Consumers Institute, Haralambos Kouris , the mass boycott will be symbolic and serve to warn of growing consumer dissatisfaction.

    The Pasok party general secretary, Kostas Laliotis said that Pasok supported the boycott and would not tolerate unjustified price hikes in either the private or the public sector. However, Development Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos indicated that utility rates could not be frozen.

    Following a meeting with Prime-minister Simitis yesterday, the President of the Industrialists Association, Odysseas Kyriakopoulos pledged assistance to ease inflationary pressures, but maintained the most effective way would be competition within a free market environment.

    Economy Minister , Nikos Hristodoulakis also urged people to fight against price rises stressing that this was a battle in support of competition and employment.

    Commenting N.D spokesman, Thodoris Roussopoulos said the government was mainly responsible maintaining that increases in utility rates led to price hikes .

    In the meantime, a survey conducted by KAPPA RESEARCH indicates that 70% of Greek families are highly concerned about price increases and believe it is the result of the circulation of the new currency- euro.

    [03] Inner cabinet to approve new tax reforms

    The inner cabinet chaired by Prime-minister Simitis meets today. It is expected to approve the third package of tax reforms. According to reliable sources new levels for untaxed income will be set above 10,000 euros for salary earners and pensioners.

    Workers and pensioners , earning less than the new levels will not be required to file a tax return . In addition , automobiles less than 1,800cc will not be considered in an objective assessment of taxpayers income , but luxury items like yachts , swimming pools and airplanes will require increased proof of income.

    [04] Savvas Xiros transferred to Koridallos prison

    Self confessed terrorist Savvas Xiros , was transferred from hospital yesterday under massive security measures, to Koridallos prison , where he will be held in custody pending trial, together with 14 other alleged members of the November 17 urban guerilla group. Because of health problems sustained when a bomb blew up in his hands 2 months ago, 40 year old Savvas Xiros &#8211; who has been charged with over 100 criminal offences &#8211;will share a cell with his older brother , Hristodoulos.

    [05] Germany should pay war reparations to War World II victims in Greece

    During events yesterday commemorating the 58th anniversary of the slaughter of civilians by German occupation forces in the village Hortiati, near Thessaloniki, the President of the Republic , Kostis Stefanopoulos said Germany should pay reparations for brutal acts committed on Greek territory during World War II , stressing that this would be a moral victory for the victims.

    [06] Pasok movement positively affected Greece s course

    On the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the foundation of the PASOK party ,its President Kostas Simitis and the Executive Office issued an announcement , which among others stresses that its late President Andreas Papandreou and its present President Kostas Simitis undoubtedly have positively affected the course of Greece

    and the movement is closely linked with all the significant changes and reforms
