[01] Gasoline up diezel oil down.
As of tomorrow , gasoline will be sold 4 drs higher per litter while
diezel oil will go down by 1,5 drs per litter.
[02] Weather forecast.
Sunshine is forecast in all parts of the country , with scattered cloud
on the mainland from early evening. Winds northerly, light to moderate,
turning strong in the southeastern Aegean. On the mainland,
temperatures will range from 18C to 35C; and in the islands from 22C to
33C. Sunny in Athens, with temperatures between 23C and 34C. Same in
Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 21C to 33C.
[03] Archibishop Hristodoulos announced the number of signatures supporting
the optional inclusion of religion on state-issued ID cards.
Archibishop of Athens and all Greece Hristodoulos today announced the
exact number of signatures -3.008.900 collected by the Church of
Greece within the framework of its campaign calling for a referendum to
be held on the optional listing of religion on the state issued ID
cards. In his speech , Mr.Hristodoulos spoke of an arrogant stand by
the government and refusal to hold a dialogue with the Church. He also
underlined that all efforts by those who tried to undermine the Church
and divide the people failed. Mr .Hristodoulos also stressed that the
Church does not oppose to any political formations and specially the
countrys government but argues with the specific decision which he
described as inconceivable and untimely. Archibishop Hristodoulos
underlined that the collection of signatures equaled a referendum
initiative stressing that the people spoke in a courageous and
civilised way and called the government to hold either a referendum or
to table a new bill in the parliament stressing that nothing can close
the doors to human societies unless the people themselves want it .
Concluding , Archibishop Hristodoulos said that the Holy Synod will
decide on the next moves of the Church in its next session in October.
According to government sources , the government remains firm on its
decision to abolish the listing of religion from the ID cards.
Archibishop Hristodoulos aim for secular role offends religious
fellings. Following his meeting with Foreign Minister Giorge Papandreou
today, the President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress party
Nikos Konstantopoulos said that the Archbishops aim for a secular role
should offend the religious feelings of those who see a movement by the
leadership of the Clergy which has no relation with Theology or the
Church . Foreign Minister , George Papandreou will today brief on
foreign policy issues , Pasok party deputies participating in the
parliaments third summer session.

The Pasok party Committee meets today to examine political positions in
view of the congress in October. The Pasok party Executive Office mets
tomorrow to reexamine the text on the partys constitution and political
positions before its submission to the partys Central Committee on
Friday. In the meantime during yesterdays meeting of the Pasok party
Executive Office , Prime-minister Kostas Simitis appeared open to
amendment moves stressing that this congress should mark the beginning
of a new political era.
[05] The ND party President meets with the presidium of the GSEE.
The President of the ND party , Kostas Karamanlis met with the
Presidium of the General Confederation of Greek Workers GSEE this
morning in view of the Thessaloniki International Fair , while
Prime-minister Simitis will meet with the presidium of the GSEE next
Monday.

Farmers can from now on call the 4-digit number 14 64 to get
information on social security issues . Labour Minister Tasos Yianitsis
is expected to make relevant announcements

Prime-minister Simitis received the Greek world champions at the
Maximos Mansion today to personally congratulate them on their
achievements.

Prime-minister Simitis will chair a meeting of the Interministerial
Committee for the Olympiad this morning. Talks will focus on the
progress of works related to the construction f the reportersvillage ,
construction of the Olympic village and the progress of road networks

The National Committee on the unified european currency meets tomorrow
to approve the Economics Ministry draftbill on the adoption of the euro
currency in transactions and set the dates for the opening of the
briefing campaign on the euro currency.
[10] Earthquake, 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the island of Skyros.
Earthquake, 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the island of Skyros. A
moderate quake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale jolted the Aegean
island of Skyros early today at 00.45 a.m. According to the Geodynamic
Institute of the National Observatory in Athens and the Geophysics Lab
at Thessaloniki University, the epicentre of the quake was in the sea
north of Skyros and some 140 kilometres northeast of Athens. There
were no reports of damage or injuries. Skyros had been struck by a
major earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale on July 26 this
year, which had originated in roughly the same spot and caused
extensive damage on the island, though fortunately there were no
casualties.
[11] Three companies expresed interest for Hellenic Petroleum company.
Three companies on Monday expressed interest in a tender to find a
strategic partner for Hellenic Petroleum SA that will take the firm, a
heavily traded stock on the Athens bourse, into the private sector.
The firms or consortiums to express interest were the Latsis Group with
Lukoil of Russia; OMV Aktiengesellschaft of Austria; and Yukos Oil
Company of Russia, the tender's consultants said in a statement. The
government wants to privatise a majority holding in Hellenic Petroleum,
relinquishing control of the energy group to private owners. The
General Confederation of Labour of Greece, the country's largest trade
union umbrella group, has called on the government to scrap its plan to
sell the new 15-30 percent stake in the firm. Development Minister
Nikos Christodoulakis has said that the shares will be sold to a
strategic investor in the same sector, allowing Hellenic Petroleum to
go global and reinforce its presence in the Balkans.
[12] Report sees 132 million children hungry children in 2020.
Over 132 children are expected to be malnurished in 2020 according to a
report by the International Food Policy Research Institute based in
Washington. In its 2020 Global Food Outlook report , IFPRI projected
the most likely food situation in the next 20 years unless goverments
made major changes in farm, economic policies and investments.

General Kofi Annan In Salzburg Austria today.
[14] NATO mission in FYROM rolls on , problems loom.
NATO soldiers were set today to collect hundreds more weapons from
ethnic Albanian guerillas in FYROM after an initial haul of more than
400 , but several potential obstacles to peace loomed on the horizon.
The NATO alliance General Secretary , George Robertson condemned the
killing of the British soldier , clarifying however that it would not
deter NATOs peace mission. FYROM government , however has expressed
strong doubts about both the peace process and NATOs role in it .
