Same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 21C to 32C.[02] Collision of Greek tanker ParisII, in the Malacca Strait, off Malysia' s portGreek registetred oil tanker "Paris II" and Panama registered cargo ship "Silverstar", both empty, collided in the Malacca Strait off Malaysias port Klang early today. The Greek ship suffered only material damage while 8 crew members from the "Silversea" were injured in the incident. Greek registered "Paris II" was headed from Singapore to Fujairah in The United Arab Emirates.[03] Archibishop Hristodoulos briefs the President of the Republic on the nationwide petition for a referedum on the optional inclusion of religious affiliation on ID cardsArchibishop of Athens and all Greece, Hristodoulos will today brief the President of the Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos on the number of signatures collected calling for a referendum on the optional inclusion of religious affiliation on the state issued ID cards.In a press conference yesterday at the Holy Synod' s headquarters in downtown Athens, Archbishop Christodoulos announced that the number of signatures collected mount to 3.000.891 and launched a strong worded criticism against the government hinting that some government circles want the de- chirtianisation of the country. The head of the Church of Greece demanded a referendum over the optional listing of religious preference or new legislation. The highly publicised announcement, expected since earlier in the month, brought various reactions from political parties and people of the letters. The government spokesman, Dimitris Reppas underlined that the number of signatures would not affect the governments policy on the contentious matter. "Its not possible for citizens rights to obey the laws of the majority or the minority", he said. The ND Party accused the government of following an arrogant stand and reminded it that the dialogue is the basic element of democracy. The President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos spoke of ungratitude on the part of the Church while the Greek Communist Party brought on the issue of division of the Church from the state. In the meantime according to reports, Prime-minister Kostas Simitis appears open to amendment moves.[05] Prime-minister Simitis received the Greek athletes, recently distinguishedPrime minister Kostas Simitis received at the Maximos Mansion yesterday the Greek athletes who were recently distinguished in major world sports events. Mr. Simitis congratulated the Greek athletes and called them to intensify their efforts in view of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Mr. Simitis also stressed that Greece achieves its targets when it works systematically.[06] Prime-minister chaired Interministerial Committee for the 2004 Olympic GamesThe 2004 Olympic Games Interministerial Committee met yesterday to discuss issues concerning all sectors of preparations for the Athens Olympic Games. Mr .Simitis called on the committee members to show effectiveness and speed up the pace for the materialisation of the Olympic projects. Greece and Turkey have agreed to co-organise the 2008 European Soccer Championship.[07] NATO Secretary General arrives in FYROM today to inspect Operation Essential HarvestNATO expressed satisfaction at the progress of the allinaces mission to collect weapons from ethnic Albanian guerillas in the former Yiougoslav Republic of Macedonia. However the FYROM government doubts that the arms NATO aims to collect is anything like the rebels full arsenal and question whether the guerillas will hand in any of their best weapons. During the first 2-days of the mission less than 500 weapons which were nothing more than museum pieces were collected. In the meantime NATO Secretary General George Robertson arrives in FYROM today to inspect Operation Essential Harvest. He will visit Krivolak where the Greek unit is stationing.[08] US planes hit targets in IranUS planes attacked two air defence targets in southern Iran yesterday in a continuing effort to degrade attempts to shoot down American and British jets policing two no-fly zones, the American Pentagon said. The targets included a control tower and were part of a system used to guide Iraqui fighter jets.[09] Athens stock marketOn the Athens stock market yesterday, the general share index ended 0.66 percent higher at 2,805.88 points, with turnover a moderate 158.9 million euros, or 54.1 billion drachmas. Drachma notes and coins will continue to circulate in Greece until February 28, 2002 after the introduction of the euro as a physical currency on January 1.
