    Meetings to preceed PASOK´s Congress Deliberations for the resumption of the Cyprus Proximity talks Greek schools in New Jersey recognized by the American Educational system Christodoulos to anounce the Church´s referendum results as regards the new identity cards Events organized in Atalanta by the Greeks Living Abroad

    [01] Meetings to preceed PASOK´s Congress

    In view of PASOK party´s imminent Congress in October, the ruling party is beginning a series of meetings this week. The Executive Bureau is convening at Maximos Mansion today for discussions on the party´s positions and charter, while another meeting will be held by the Central Committee of the ruling PASOK party next Friday. In the meantime, during his address in Argos yesterday, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis spoke of a Congress with a new convergence process, maintaining that Greece´s future and prospects depended on the people´s alliance with PASOK party. On a relative development, Environment minister Kostas Laliotis referred to the decisive importance of the Congress, adding that he was in favour of Mr. Simitis re-election, a development considered certain by Environment minister Evagelos Venizelos. Finally, the Prime Minister is going to anounce a packet of measures for the social sector that will be amounting to 1.3 trillion drachmas a few days before the inauguration ceremony of the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair.

    [02] Deliberations for the resumption of the Cyprus

    United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan is meeting with the Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash in Austria on Tuesday to find a way so that the Cyprus Proximity talks could resume. Besides, on Monday Mr. Denktash is going to meet with European Union Commissioner responsible for the EU expansion Gunter Ferhoygen in Zurich today.

    Meanwhile, Greek Foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will be on a two-day formal visit to Cyprus on September 4 and 5 to partcipate in the preparation of the Greek-Cypriot side in view of the imminent Cyprus proximity talks under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General. On a relative development, addressing the 12th World Congress of Cyrpiots living abroad, Greek Foreign Deputy minister Grigoris Niotis stressed that any change of the basis regarding the discussions on the Cyprus issue was inconeivable, since it would boost Mr. Denktash´s intransigence. As regards Greek-Turkish relations, he stressed that their improvement would take place only if Turkey contributed effectively to the resolution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of the United Nations resolutions and took under consideration Cyprus European prospects. Additionally, Turkey must fully comply with the Helsinki framework as regards Turkey´s relationship with the European Union.

    [03] Proximity talks Greek schools in New Jersey recognized by the American Educational system

    Greek Educational schools in New Jersey will receive a boost following the promotion of the World Language Bill at Parliament by deputy Steve Korodimos. According to the new bill the studies of Americans of Greek descent at those schools will be recognized by the American Educational system.

    [04] Christodoulos to anounce the Churchs referendum results as regards the new identity cards

    Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos is expected to anounce on Tuesday the number of signatures collected by the believers who are in favour of identity cards bearing their religious affiliation. Additionally, he is going to meet with the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos on Wednesday to discuss the same issue.

    [05] Events organized in Atalanta by the Greeks Living Abroad

    The cultural events organized by the Greeks Living Abroad are to begin in Atalanta on September 7, while the first commercial and cultural exhibition in 2001, in which 85 firms will be participating, is going to take place on November 5 to 6.
