In Brussels, the highlights included the "European Youth Celebrations" on 5 November, where seven projects (see annex) that had received funding from the 'Youth in Action' programme received trophies in the presence of Ján Figel', the European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth. On 6 November, 200 young people gathered with stakeholders and policy m//ers to discuss the future direction of EU youth policy.[02] Danuta Hübner encourages Switzerland to step up cooperation with EUDanuta Hübner, European Commissioner for regional policy, is today in Berne and Lucerne to take part in a series of meetings on relations between Switzerland and the EU, and on Swiss participation in EU Regional Policy cooperation programmes in particular. Cette proposition tient compte des avis scientifiques les plus récents du Conseil international pour l'exploration de la mer (CIEM) et du Comité scientifique, technique et économique de la pêche (CSTEP) de la Commission au sujet de l'état des stocks halieutiques ainsi que des contributions des diverses parties prenantes en la matière. La plupart des stocks de poissons continuent d'être surexploités en 2008. Afin de jeter les bases d'une industrie saine pour l'avenir, nous devrons donc pêcher moins à court terme. La Commission entend reconstituer les principaux stocks halieutiques à l'aide de plans à long terme. Pour d'autres stocks, une approche progressive est appliquée et consiste à modifier les quotas de 15 % maximum chaque année. Cette stratégie offre une certaine stabilité aux pêcheurs tout en favorisant la transition vers des pratiques de pêche plus durables d'un point de vue écologique.[04] Commission launches "Farmland": The fun way for kids to learn about animal welfareIn an effort to raise awareness among children about the importance of treating farmed animals in a respectful and humane way, the European Commission launched today "Farmland," the European children's website on animal welfare. "Farmland" is an interactive and informative online computer game targeting children aged between 9 and 12, which also aims to help tomorrow's consumers be in a position to make informed choices about the food they will be buying. The Commission is also developing an online teacher's toolbox containing exercises that can be used in class to help children better understand the issue of animal welfare. Some Member States have already expressed interest in the project.[05] Mariann Fischer Boel receives European of the Year award from Danish European MovementMariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development on Friday received the European of the Year Award for 2008 from the Danish European Movement, a cross party pro-EU organisation. The award was presented at a ceremony in the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen on Friday. This is the eighth time the award has been presented to a person who has made an exceptional effort to promote a European agenda. The Movement conferred the award for Mrs Fischer Boel's determined efforts to reform the Common Agricultural Policy and modernise the European farm sector to make it competitive and independent of outdated market organisations.[06] Commission clears acquisition of Micromania by GamestopThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of SAS SFMI Micromania (Micromania) of France by GameStop Corp. of the US. GameStop sells video game products and accessories, mainly in the US. Micromania sells video game products in France. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.[07] Commission clears acquisition of Vanderlande by SHVThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Vanderlande Industries BV (Vanderlande) of The Netherlands by SHV Holdings NV (SHV), also of The Netherlands. SHV has diverse activities in the oil, gas and LPG sectors, consumer goods and private equity, heavy lifting equipment and renewable energy. Vanderlande provides automatic handling material systems and accompanying services. It is active in baggage handling at airports, distribution centres and express parcel sorting facilities. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.Rediffusion [08] En visite à Bakou, Andris Piebalgs souligne le rôle stratégique de l’Azerbaïdjan dans la réalisation du corridor gazier méridionalAndris Piebalgs, membre de la Commission chargé de l’énergie, était aujourd'hui à Bakou où il a rencontré le président de l’Azerbaïdjan M. Ilham Aliyev ainsi que le ministre de l’Énergie M. Natig Aliyev et le ministre des Affaires étrangères M. Elmar Mammadyarov. Au cours de ces rencontres, M. Piebalgs a souligné combien l’Azerbaïdjan était un partenaire stratégique de l’Union européenne. Il a réaffirmé la détermination de l’UE à entretenir avec l’Azerbaïdjan des relations étroites et renforcées et à renforcer son partenariat énergétique. À la veille de l'adoption de la deuxième analyse stratégique de la politique énergétique, M. Le Commissaire Michel a salué l'implication directe de la diplomatie Africaine notamment à travers la nomination des anciens présidents Olusegun Obasanjo et Benjamin Mpaka comme facilitateur et médiateur dans les conflits. La région s'est aussi dite prête à participer directement à la résolution des conflits.
