[02] Commission clears proposed acquisition of GE Plastics by Sabic
The European Commission has cleared under the EC Merger Regulation the
proposed acquisition of GE Plastics of the US by Saudi Basic Industries
Corporation (Sabic), based in Saudi-Arabia. After examining the effects of
the operation on customers and competitors, the Commission concluded that
the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the
European Economic Area or a substantial part of it.
[03] Commission confirms sending statement of objections to companies in
sodium chlorate sector
The European Commission can confirm that a Statement of Objections has been
sent to a number of companies regarding their role in a cartel for sodium
chlorate, alleging that they violated Article 81 of the EC Treaty and
Article 53 of the Agreement on the European Economic Area. Sodium chlorate
is mainly used as a bleaching agent in the pulp and paper industry.
[04] Volume of retail trade up by 0.9% in euro area
In June 2007, compared to June 2006, the volume of retail trade grew by
0.9% in the euro area (EA13) and by 2.2% in the EU27. Compared to May 2007,
the retail sales index rose by 0.4% and 0.5% respectively. In June 2007,
compared to June 2006, retail trade of "food, drinks and tobacco" fell by
0.4% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27. The non food sector
increased by 2.1% and 4.1% respectively. Among the Member States for which
data are available, total retail trade rose in sixteen Member States and
fell only in Germany (-2.5%). The largest increases were observed in Latvia
(+24.4%), Lithuania (+16.1%), Estonia (+13.0%) and Poland (+9.2%). These
first estimates come from Eurostat.
