[01] Playing for Europe : football stars unite to celebrate 50 years of the
European Union
The best of European football will be on show in Manchester on 13 March to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signature of the Treaty of Rome
setting up the modern-day European Union. Coinciding with the 50th
anniversary of their participation as the first English team to play UEFA's
European club competition, Manchester United will play a Europe XI to be
coached by Italian World Cup winner Marcello Lippi. The Europe XI squad
includes many of the Italian World Cup winning squad, Barcelona and
Liverpool Captains, Carles Puyol and Steven Gerrard. Three Brazilian stars,
Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Juninho Pernambucano will also play as guests for
the Europe XI.
importantes.
[03] Evaluation of the Single European Sky reveals positive impacts on air
traffic management in Europe
The European Commission has published an independent evaluation of the
impact of the Single European Sky (SES) initiative on air traffic
management performance. This document will assist the Commission to prepare
a formal report on the Single European Sky to the European Parliament and
the Council later this year.
[05] Statement by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, on the high level
meeting in Vienna on the future status of Kosovo (10/03)
"Today's high-level talks in Vienna concluded the negotiations held over
the last 14 months between United Nations Office of the Special Envoy for
Kosovo (UNOSEK) and the concerned parties on the future status of Kosovo. I
wish to thank President Ahtisaari for his untiring efforts and leadership
throughout this process. I fully support his intention to present his final
proposal to the UN Security Council in the course of this month. President
Ahtisaari's settlement proposal is a realistic compromise, given the
parties' irreconcilable positions on Kosovo's status. It provides a
framework for a future stable, democratic and multi-ethnic Kosovo. I
welcome the importance given in the settlement proposal to the protection
of rights of communities, the right of return for all displaced persons,
the protection of cultural and religious sites and the provisions of
decentralisation. A sustainable solution of Kosovo's status is needed,
without further delay. The Commission remains fully committed to helping to
bring the status process through to completion during the next phase in the
United Nations. The status settlement will have to be anchored in a clear
European perspective, so as to enhance stability in Kosovo and in the wider
region."
[06] Outcome of the meeting of the Committee on Fisheries of the UN FAO
(09/03, Rome)
European Commissioner Joe Borg, responsible for Fisheries and Maritime
Affairs, has welcomed the outcome of the 27th session of the Committee on
Fisheries (COFI) of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation,
which concluded on Friday 9th March in Rome. "The priorities adopted by the
FAO Committee for the next two years are very much in line with our own
international agenda. This is particularly the case with regard to the
importance we attach to combating Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU)
fishing and on protecting the marine environment on the high seas. The
support of the international community for this task validates our strategy
as one which can bring states together, and as such achieve real progress
in ensuring concerted action in relation to international law in these
crucial areas."
