[01] Commission clears joint venture between Wacker and Air Products in the
field of dispersions and powders
The European Commission has authorised Wacker-Chemie GmbH (Wacker) and Air
Products and Chemicals Inc (Air Products) to combine their worldwide
dispersions and powders business. The merger does not raise competition
concerns in the European Economic Area (EEA) given Air Products' relatively
minor presence there prior to the operation and intense competition within
the EEA and worldwide on the relevant markets.
[03] Business and Consumer surveys for July 1998 : positive economic
outlook in Europe
The latest results from the business and consumer surveys conducted by the
European Commission's Directorate General for economic and financial
affairs are published today. Economic sentiment in the European Union (EU)
improved in July compared with June. The increase in the leading indicator
was more pronounced in the euro-zone (EUR-11) than for the EU as a whole.
The consumer confidence indicator remained stable compared with last month
for the EU as a whole, whereas it increased in the EUR-11. There were
however large differences between countries in consumers' confidence : in
Germany and France there was a marked improvement, though in Italy and the
United Kingdom the opposite was recorded. Capacity utilisation in
manufacturing industry in the EU continues to be high according to the
latest results.
