[01] Commission approves Swedish electricity merger
The European Commission has decided to clear the merger between Stockholm
Energi and Gullspång, both active on the Swedish electricity market.
Gullspång is owned by IVO, the largest Finnish company in the energy
sector. Stockholm Energi is owned by the City of Stockholm. Following the
operation the activities of Stockholm Energi and Gullspång will be
coordinated under Birka Energi AB, which will be jointly controlled by the
City of Stockholm and IVO. The rationale of the concentration is to enable
Stockholm Energi and Gullspång to compete effectively with the two largest
producers on the Swedish market, Vattenfall and Sydkraft. Given the
latter's market share the merger poses no threat to competition.
