[01] Measures to support beef market
[01] Measures to support beef market
Following the opinion of the Beef Management Committee on Friday 30th
August, the European Commission will apply two measures which aim to
stabilise the beef market which continues to be depressed due to the BSE crisis. Firstly as an exceptional measure intervention has been opened for light/young
male cattle i.e. minimum weight of 300 kgs live weight and maximum age 10
months at a price which will be set at the intervention price for larger cattle plus
23%. This is one of the Commission's proposals to Council aimed at rebalancing
the market and is of particular importance for french producers. The measure
introduced by the Commission under emmergency procedure will only apply for
September. The Commission hopes that at that stage the Council will have
approved it's proposals in which case this special intervention can continue. It was also decided to purchase 23,530 tonnes of beef into intervention including,
6,600 tonnes from Germany, 2,800 from France, 4,500 from Ireland and 3,000
tonnes from the United Kingdom.
