Vocabulary for contracts
A Recommendation urging public authorities and economic operators to use a
Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) when drafting public procurement
notices has been adopted by the European Commission on the initiative of Single
Market Commissioner Mario MONTI. The CPV, which attributs a nine digit code
to some 6,000 terms commonly used in the procurement process, has been
published today (3 September) in all 11 official EU-languages in the Supplement
to the EC Official Journal in order to make the vocabulary widely known.

. "The willingness and ability of the mass of consumers to use the services and
potential of the Information Society will determine the extent to which it develops;
a big business has already been built on "business to business" communication
systems - an even greater business will be developed providing that it is designed
to meet consumer needs and proves useful to them", said Emma BONINO,
member of the European Commission responsible for Consumer Policy, when
opening a two-day Forum on "Consumer issues and the Information Society" in
Dublin today. The Forum was organised on the initiative of the Irish Presidency,
and brought together representatives not only of consumer organisations, but of
many other interested parties, including suppliers of new communications
equipment, telecommunications networks, the advertising industry, and public
authorities. Emma BONINO claimed that the Information Society would be the
source of many benefits for consumers, but would also bring new dangers for the
consumer and required new approaches to ensure that consumer interests were
