[01] The Commission clears the acquisition of sole control of Sunworld by
Thomas Cook
The notified operation consists in the acquisition by Thomas Cook Group Limited
of the entire issued share capital of Sunworld Limited. Thomas Cook, which is
a wholly owned subsidiary of the German state-owned bank Westdeutsche
Landesbank Girozentrale (WestLB), is a leading UK-based travel agent also
active in the tour operating business and the provision of principally travel-related financial services (i.e. foreign exchange and issue of travellers' cheques).
Sunworld is a UK-based tour operator exclusively controlled by Ibertouring
Holding BV (Ibertouring), which is a Dutch holding company belonging to the
Spanish tour operating group Viajes Iberia SA (GVI).
[02] Irish Presidency and Commission protested today to the US administration
against the Iran/Libya sanctions Act
The Irish Presidency and the European Commission, on behalf of the EU,
yesterday made an official demarche to the US administration in protest at the
signing of the Iran/Libya sanctions Act.
[03] Flooding disaster in Huesca, Spain
The European Commission deplores the consequences of the flooding disaster
which occurred on 7th August 1996 in the Municipality of Biescas in the Province
of Huesca and expresses its solidarity with the victims and their relatives.
