LUXEMBOURG - The General Affairs Council sprung a surpise on Tuesday by
deciding not to wait to file a complaint with the World Trade Organisation
against Washington's anti-Cuba laws.
[02] EU calls on Israel to help peace
LUXEMBOURG - The European Union, using its hardest-hitting language to date,
rebuked Israel on Tuesday for not meeting its obligations in the Middle East
peace process.
[03] EU/Burma detainees
LUXEMBOURG - The European Union on Tuesday called for the immediate release
of more than 500 people detained by Burmese military rulers in a crackdown
on pro-democracy activists. The General Affairs Council released a
statement saying it was very concerned at the situation in Burma and
calling on the State Law and Order Restoration Committee to lift a blockade
on the home of opposition leader Aung San Suu Ky .
[04] Summit to confirm IGC calendar
LUXEMBOURG - The European Union summit in Dublin on Saturday should allow
leaders to confirm the intention to finish the inter-governmental
conference in June 1997, French Foreign Minister Herve de Charette said on
Tuesday.
[05] Daimler-Benz/Leica deal cleared
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had cleared the
acquisition by Temic Telefunken Microelectronic GmbH, a unit of Daimler-Benz,
and Switzerland's Leica AG of ADC Automotive Distance Control Systems GmbH.
[06] EU to rule on SFP TV studios
BRUSSELS - The European Commission will rule on Wednesday that France
illegally granted 1.1 billion francs in subsidies to television programme
producer Societe Francaise de Production between 1993 and early 1996,
Commission sources said on Tuesday.
[07] EU/Lisbon/Athens/low-sulphur diesel
BRUSSELS - The European Commission will ask Athens and Lisbon about their
implementation of new EU diesel rules after reports that sales of banned fuel
in those countries were due to continue past the October 1 deadline.

BRUSSELS - The European Union must take advantage of an expected expansion of
world agricultural trade, Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Tuesday.
[09] EU-U.S. grain tension - Fischler
BRUSSELS - European Union Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler tried on Tuesday to
cool growing transatlantic tensions over grain export subsidies, saying EU
refunds were based on U.S. prices.
[10] EU/WTO action against Argentina
BRUSSELS - The European Commission threatened on Tuesday to seek talks at the
World Trade Organisation if Argentina does not lift barriers which are
"severely restricting" EU exports of textiles and clothing.
[11] Bulgaria to join WTO this week
SOFIA - Bulgaria is expected to sign a membership accord with the World Trade
Organisation in Geneva on Wednesday, Trade Minister Atanas Paparizov said on
Tuesday.
