[01] UK sees EU summit as unnecessary
LONDON - Britain sees a summit meeting of European Union heads of government
to be held on Saturday as unnecessary, but also unlikely to harm its
interests, officials said on Wednesday.
[02] EU asked to give impetus to IGC
BRUSSELS - Irish Prime Minister John Bruton told his European Union colleagues
on Wednesday that they must use a special summit in Dublin at the weekend to
give a push to the EU's preparations for the 21st century.
[03] Slow progress on EU reform
PARIS - France and Germany inched slowly towards narrowing differences on
European Union reform on Wednesday, reporting progress on interior and justice
affairs, but wide divergences remained over the European Parliament.
[04] Lira should be in EMU first wave
PARIS - France said on Wednesday it wanted Italy to be among the founder
members of a single European currency but the lira must first "catch up" with
the franc. In LONDON, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said he was
confident that his country would qualify to join a single European currency in
1999.

BRUSSELS - The European Union must do more to smoothe the way for citizens to
study, get training and conduct research in other EU countries, the European
Commission said on Wednesday.

DUBLIN - German Chancellor Helmut Kohl promised the European Union's 300
million citizens on Wednesday that the bloc would crack down on drugs and
crime.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Wednesday made good its threat to
include only token products in a second phase of textile trade liberalisation
when it unveiled a list of items to be freed-up next year.

BRUSSELS - European Union External Affairs Commissioner Hans van den Broek
said on Wednesday any future ties between the EU and the Balkan republics
would be conditional on full implementation of the peace accords.

DUBLIN - EU President Ireland welcomed the first meeting of the collective
presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday and said it had a chance to
secure peace.

BRUSSELS - Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Emma Bonino on Wednesday urged the
European Union to break the world's silence over the human rights situation in
Afghanistan under the new Taleban militia regime.

STOCKHOLM - Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson called on Monday for a rapid
expansion of the European Union to promote security and stability.

BRUSSELS - The head of the European Commission's public health and safety
directorate, William Hunter, told the European Parliament on Wednesday his
unit was ill-equipped to tackle the risk to humans of mad cow disease.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission rejected allegations on Wednesday that
Portuguese public television was receiving state subsidies, a thorny issue

BRUSSELS - The European Commission ruled on Wednesday that France had
illegally granted 1.1 billion francs in subsidies to television programme
producer Societe Francaise de Production between 1993 and early 1996.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had asked France for
more information about measures to help its textile industry which are being
closely watched by German and Italian rivals.
