[A] NEWS ITEMS[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] ``Council of Ministers decisions'' According to KIBRIS (19.8.99) the so-called Counsil of Ministers, convenedyesterday, adopted a number of radical measures which aim at increasing the volume of exports to Turkey and at reviving the trade sector.Measures include: · Import of used cars of over three years will no longer be permitted. The practice up to now was that up to six year old used cars could be imported. · The same custom duty valid in Turkey will be levied on about 80 items imported to the ``TRNC'' from third countries: Soap, shoes, plastic items and albums, are some of the items. Such products may be exported to Turkey free of any custom duty. · In order to encourage tourism, custom duty on some products such as lences, perfume, trays, umbrellas and artificial flowers, has been lifted or reduced. These products cannot be exported to Turkey but only taken by travellers to Turkey as personal effects. · No custom duty will be levied on products considered ``delicate items'' such as cassettes, CDs, porcelain. Import of such products to Turkey will not be permitted. · Import duty on cars will be the same as Turkey. As a result the cost of cars will be reduced by about 3,000 dollars. This does not apply to jeeps, the price of which is expected to rise. (DP) [02] ``Marine Products Research and Development Centre'' leased According to KIBRIS (19.8.99) reports that with the decision of theso-called Council of Ministers (dated 30th July), the Marine Products Centre of Research and Development at Gastria, which covers an area of 17 donums (1/4 acre) between Bogazi and Gastria, has been leased for 49 years to the University of Halig, Turkey and to Vakif Foundation.(DP) [03] Denktash - British High Commissioner KIBRIS (19.8.99) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash metyesterday with the British High Commissioner Edward Clay.No statements were made. (DP) [04] Cargo fleet According to KIBRIS (19.8.99), the cargo boat ``itinat Ro- Ro'', 75 metreslength, has been bought by the ``itinat otobus company''.The boat can carry 1202 tons of cargo and will make three weekly trips between Famagusta and Mersin, as from August 20. With this new ship the ``TRNC'' cargo fleet numbers 33 ships. (DP) [05] Patriotic Union Movement calls for a common presidential candidate According to KIBRIS (19.8.99) the Patriotic Union Movement (YBH) has calledfor a common candidate in the next so-called ``presidential elections of 2000''. The YBH insists that the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) and Republican Turkish Party (RTP), should put forward a common candidate.The organizational secretary of the YBH Irret Izcan, at a press conference yesterday, declared that because of the long team policies applied by ruling classes, ``the Turkish Cypriot community entered into a process of annihilation'' and that ``preparation is in progress to integrate the North of Cyprus to Turkey''. He said: ``The YBH refuses to accept the status quo and will continue the struggle to change this existing order''. He added that his party has started work to coordinate the struggle among those organizations that are in favour of peace and agreement and against integration. Izcan said that the YBH is ready to act jointly with those who are in favour of peace, democracy and a federal settlement in Cyprus, who are ready to defend the existence of the Turkish Cypriot Community and who are against integration. He called on those forces which share these main principles to start urgently to move. Speaking at the same Press Conference former RTP chairman Orher Orgun accused Rauf Denktash and Dervish Eroglu of not wanting a settlement. He said that the majority of the Turkish Cypriot Community longed far a settlement, in Cyprus. He added that the CLP has yet to make up its mind whether to join them or not. In his turn Alpay Durduran said the people want a common candidate who will represent their real interests.
