[01] Turkish Cypriot allegations at the UN KIBRIS (20/8/99) reports that the so-called representative of the ``TRNC'' in

New York Aytug Plumer, in a letter to the General Secretary of UN Kofi Annan alleged that the Greek-Cypriot side continues militarization of the island. Although the Greek-Cypriot side has not deployed the S-300 missiles in Cyprus but in Crete as a result of Turkish pressure, the Greek Cypriots have bought six TOR-M1 missiles from Greece, the letter asserted. It is further claimed that Greece will buy from Russia 21 such missiles and will transfer them to the Greek-Cypriot side.

In the letter, Plumer lists the arms that reportedly the Greek Cypriot side plans to buy (up to the year - 2001): 41 tanks, 12 155MM mobile artillery, 7 anti-aircraft 35MM, 12 ``Aspide'' systems, 2 Mistral-Atlas missiles, 3 destroyers, 2 patrol boats, 3 MM-40 Exocet shore missile systems, 20-32 planes, 4-6 helicopters and 12 S-300 missile systems.

Finally, Plumer dismissed as unfounded Greek Cypriot complaints to Annan that Cyprus’ air space had been violated. He claimed that the Turkish planes have the right to use the ``TRNC'' air space over which, he asserted, the Greek Cypriot side has no jurisdiction or right of say whatsoever. (DP)

[05] US legislative Assistants KIBRIS (20.8.99) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the

so-called TRNC Assembly Speaker Ertusrul Hasipoglu, the so-called Foreign Affairs Minister Tahsiri Ertusruloslu and the leader of the Communal Liberation Party (TLP, Vice President of the so-called coalition government, Mustafa Akinci met yesterday with the US legislative assistants who are in the ``TRNC'' as guests of the so-called Foreign Affairs Ministry. The six- member delegation of US legislative assistants said that the American people do not know the Cyprus issue very well and that the purpose of their visit is to acquaint themselves with it. They said that on their return to the USA, they will inform the members of the US Congress about the situation on the island.

Ertusruloslu said that the US legislative assistants’ visit is a very important event, underlining the significant role of Congress in US foreign policy. He said that the inevitable reality of the existence of two separate states, had to be explained to them.
