[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] US legislative assistants According to KIBRIS (18.8.99) the so-called TRNC Assembly Speaker ErtugrulHasipoglu, had a meeting yesterday with a group of US Legislative Assistants visiting the occupied area as guests of the so-called Foreign and Defence Ministry.The paper adds that Hasipoglu informed the visitors about the Cyprus problem. During the meeting Hasipoglu repeated the known Turkish views regarding the Cyprus problem. (MY) [02] Help to Turkey According to KIBRIS (18.8.99) the so-called Council of Ministers in ameeting yesterday decided to launch a campaign to help the earthquake victims in Turkey. Accounts have been opened in banks for this purpose. It was decided that all civil servants contribute the equivalent of two days pay.Blood donation has also started. (DP) [03] Turkish Peace Force Commander KIBRIS (18.8.99) reports that the Major- General Sukru Sariisik, who has beenappointed commander of the ``Turkish Peace Force in Cyprus'', arrived in the ``TRNC'' yesterday. He assumes his new duties on 30 August.Brigadier-general Abdullah Atay, Commander of the 14th armored brigade, has also arrived. Meanwhile, officers who completed their service in the ``TRNC'', paid a fare-well visit to Denktash. (DP) [04] Denktash - Greek Cypriot reserves According to KIBRIS (18.8.99) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash,referring to the Greek Cypriot press reports about Greek Cypriot reserves in Pyla keeping their service weapons in their homes, said that he will ask the UN Peace Force ``whether it will fulfill its responsibilities or not''. Denktash said that he had discussed this issue with the UN officials. He also said that he raised this issue during his meeting with Dame Ann Hercus. Denktash said that if the UN does not fulfill its responsibility, then measures should be taken, however, Denktash added ``the UN should fulfill this responsibility''.(MY) [05] Eroglu at Lefka According to Birlik (18.8.99) the so-called TRNC prime Minister DervishEroglu, speaking in occupied Lefka, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the occupation of the town, alleged that ``Lefka has never been Greek Cypriot land''.Dervish Eroglu said that there are people who try to take decisions concerning the future of the Turkish Cypriots. He said ``it is not possible to take decisions on the future of the TRNC across the oceans''. Eroglu criticized G-8, the EU and the UN for drawing scenaria on the ``TRNC'' and claimed that sooner or later the ``TRNC reality will be accepted by all''. (MY) [06] Denktash - Ombudsman According to Yeni Demokrat (18.8.99) the Turkish Cypriot leader RaufDenktash had a meeting yesterday with the ``Ombudsman'' Nail Atalay. Views were exchanged on the institution of the ``Ombudsman''.Denktash said the aim is to accomplish better administration of the ``TRNC''. He noted that the reports prepared by the ``Ombudsman'', in cooperation with the ``Exchequer'' and the ``Audit Department'' are important and must been studied closely. (DP) [07] Energy production and transport improvements According to KIBRIS (18.8.99) Turkey will give to ``TRNC'' 5,5 million dollarsfor the renovation of energy production and transport.A project to renovate energy production and transport in the ``TRNC'' is being prepared. The money will be given in two installments of 4 million dollars and 1.5 million dollars. The so-called Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu met yesterday with the Vice President of Energy Production and Distribution Limited Company (TEDAS), Oner Gulyesil. Eroglu stated that the TEDAS delegation is the ``TRNC'' to evaluate the project. (DP) [08] Hercus - Denktash Ortam (18.8.99) reports that Ann Hercus visited Denktash, in the frameworkof her shuttle diplomacy.Denktash’s advisers Necati Munir Ertekun, Taner Etkin and Mustafa Evran were also present.
