[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] No Talks Until Greeks Cancel EU Application ``No talks will be held unless the Greek Cypriots suspend their one-sidedapplication for EU membership'', Denktash declared following his monthly routine meeting (16.8.99) with so-called Acting Chief Prosecutor Mehmet Ali Sefik.According to illegal Bayrak radio (16.8.99), Denktash said that sitting at the negotiating table with the Greek Cypriot side, which carries a false title, would tantamount to the denial of the existence of the ``TRNC''. Answering reporters’ questions Denktash asserted that the speech delivered by President Clerides at Dherynia can be understood only by a world that is not aware of the atrocities committed against the Turkish Cypriots and of the reasons for delineating a border in Cyprus. ``No solution was found in Cyprus for 36 years, and if the Greek Cypriots continue to behave in the same manner, we will fail to reach a solution in the future as well.'' Denktash warned. Denktash reacted to President Clerides’ participation in the anti- occupation activities at Dherynia, saying that this encourages the fanatics. Dismissing Clerides’ remarks that he wants to reach a compromise, Denktash repeated his assertions about Glion. The Greek Cypriots must realize that they are not the sole owners of Cyprus, Denktash remarked, adding: ``If they want to reach a conciliation, they should be aware of the murders they committed between 1963 and 1974, of their goal of enosis, and the fact that they are living under the banner of a false republic.'' Denktash further said that the negotiations can begin if the Greek Cypriots suspend the one-sided application for EU membership, stop meddling with the guarantees agreement, and immediately raise the exchange of property issue. No solution can be attained by means of armaments and embargoes, he said, adding: ``No one can change geography and history. The Greek Cypriot youth should learn about the deeds committed against the Turkish Cypriots. Rather than cry out at the borders, the Greek Cypriots should gather in churches and ask Jesus for forgiveness.'' (DP) [02] No Link Between Cyprus Issue, EU Membership According to Ankara Anatolia (16.8.99) in a written statement Ismail Cem,the Turkish Foreign Minister, said that Turkey’s approach towards a compromise on the Cyprus question is clear, adding that Turkey has never set up any connection between the Cyprus question and the relations with the European Union.Referring to press reports about a US plan for Cyprus, Cem claimed that the source of such news is mainly the Greek-Cypriot side. Solution of the Cyprus problem, he said, has to be found by considering the realities on the island and it should be based on the acceptance of the existence to two equal and sovereign states on the island. Compromise on Cyprus and the acceptance of Turkey as the 12th candidate country to the EU, are totally two separate issues, Cem said and noted that Turkey never uses Cyprus, which is a national case, as a bargaining chip to gain any position at the EU. (DP) [03] Meat prices According to KIBRIS (16.8.99) meat in the ``TRNC'' is too expensive, comparedto other countries. For instance, veal is sold in the ``TRNC'' at 3,300, 000TL while in the free areas of Cyprus at 1,560,000TL, in Mersin (Turkey) 1,700,000TL and in England at 1,400,000TL.Lamb is sold in the ``TRNC'' at 3,000,000TL, in the free areas of Cyprus at 2,730,000TL, in Mersin at 1,700,000TL and in England at 1,000,000TL. The newspaper underlines the fact that the butchers buy the meat per oka but sell it per kilo. (Note 1 oka=1.3kg) (DP) [04] Music School at ``EMU'' KIBRIS (16.8.99) reports that the ``EMU'' (Eastern Mediterranean University)will operate a Music School as from the next academic year. The pianist Asli Giray Ramon will be the Head of the new Music School. She has represented the ``TRNC'' in concerts in Turkey, USA, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and Skopje. (DP) [05] Early Day Motion According to KIBRIS (17.8.99) an Early Day Motion supporting the 20 July,1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of the island has been opened for signatures at the British House of Commons. The motion was prepared and submitted to the House of Commons by Ulster Unionist Party MP John Taylor and was signed, besides John Taylor by Conservative MPs Richard Body, Michael Colvin, Nicholas Winterton and Ann Winterton: Labour Party MP Jamie Cann and Ulster Unionist Party Ray Beggs. The motion claims that the Turkish invasion and operation has turned the island into a secure region, something which the UN was unable to do. It is also claimed that a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem has not been found because of the precondition that Cyprus Government be considered as the ``government of whole of Cyprus''. The motion concludes by a call to UK and the UN demanding removal of this ``precondition''. (MY) [06] Population and labour statistics KIBRIS (16.8.99) reports that the so- called State Planning Bureau and the``Department of Statistics & Research'' published through the State Statistic Institute printing office of Ankara, the results of a research on ``The social & Economy quality of the population'' which refers to the social, demographic & economic structure of the population of the ``TRNC''. The issue, he said, is to transform these deposits into investments. 35 million dollars are not enough for the development of ``TRNC''. The interest on loans must be lower, so that investors can make use of them.He also announced that revenue this year from VAT reached 9,5 trillion TL while 1,5 trillion TL returns to the people.
