[01] Talat Criticizes Economic Policy, Integration With Turkey According to illegal Bayrak Radio (15/8/99) Republican Turkish Party leader

Mehmet Ali Talat accused Denktash and the ``government'' of damaging the economy with their integration policy. Talat said: The wretched situation of the Turkish Cypriot economy, which has been detached from production, was manifested once again in the recent Turkish Council of Ministers decision. Talat declared that the economy of the ``TRNC'' should be strengthened and protected with a view to increasing production.

Claiming that the ``Turkish-TRNC Partnership Council'' convenes when the sides are angry at someone and that Denktash is turning a blind eye to the illegal workers issue, Talat cited examples of the negative aspects of bilateral economic relations.

[02] ``Suit-case trade'' suspended The Turkish Cypriot press report that according to new custom regulations in

Turkey, affected as from 12.8.99 custom free imports in suitcases of products such as sugar, tobacco, tea, alcohol, porcelain and small house- hold effects will no longer be permitted.

This is a heavy blow on the ``suitcase-trade'' say the newspapers whereby ``traders'' could import goods in Turkey packed in suitcases without any tax imposed.

According to Hurriyet Kibris (14.8.99) the decision has affected mostly 400 persons involved in the trade of tea, who staged a demonstration (13.8.99) in occupied Nicosia. The demonstrators claimed that Turgut Yilmaz (Mesut Yilmaz’s brother, the leader of ANAP) is behind the decision. Turgut Yilmaz holds a senior position in Gay-Kur, the biggest tea-producing company in Turkey. Tea traders demand compensation for their damages as well as license to export their products to Turkey.

[06] Confederation the last train Halkin Sesi (14.8.99) reports that the leader of the Turkish Cypriots Rauf

Denktash on the occasion of 25th anniversary of the Turkish invasion called on the Greek Cypriot side not to miss the last train, which is that of confederation.

Replying to reporters’ questions regarding the recent statement by President Clerides that ``loose federation is not a confederation'', Denktash said that at Glion Clerides had said that the Greek-Cypriot side goes to the negotiations for tactical reasons, and he continues these tactics. Denktash repeated his known allegations that Greek-Cypriot side hides behind the title of Cyprus Government, pointing out that there is no question of establishing even a confederation, if this hostility of the Greek-Cypriots against the Turkish-Cypriots continues.

Denktash finally called on the Greek-Cypriots to stop giving bases to Greece and to repent for their actions in the period 1963-74.

He said that the Turkish Cypriots will continue their course aiming at two states.
