KIBRIS (7.7.99) reports that Turkey“s State Minister responsible for sports, Fikret Unlu, has arrived in the occupied area and in a statement at occupied Tymbou airport he said ``the sports embargo against the TRNC must be lifted.'' He added that on their part they will exert every effort towards this end.

Referring to the stance of the Turkish Football Federation as regards the pseudostate, he said ``this is due to the federation“s obligation to comply with the decisions of international organizations of which she is a member.'' (EF)

[02] Gurel in the occupied area All local newspapers (8.7.99) report that Turkish State Minister responsible

for Cyprus affairs, Sukru Sina Gurel, will arrive in the occupied area today (9.7.99) as the guest of so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu.

During his stay, Gurel will have various contacts in the framework of the preparation of the third so-called Turkey-``TRNC'' association council. He will be also meeting with Rauf Denktash and Dervis Eroglu.

[03] Church turned into mosque YENIDUZEN (8.7.99) reports under the title ``We will again have problems with

the Europeans'' and says that ``after the church in Ayios Epiktitos was last year turned into a mosque, the officials are now silently demolishing the church“s bell-tower.'' The paper notes that this act is expected to cause new headaches for the pseudostate in European fora.''

[04] On the visa restrictions for Turkish Cypriots

HALKIN SESI (8.7.99) reports that British parliamentarians have supported the campaign launched by Turkish Cypriots in Britain for the lifting of visa restrictions for the Turkish Cypriots as well as the embargoes against the pseudostate.

It is reported that parliamentarian Andy Love had a meeting with representatives of the Turkish Cypriots of London and stated that ``along with his colleagues he will exert efforts for the lifting of these injustices.'' (EF)

[05] Paper wonders what is Turkey really doing in Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily AVRUPA (7.7.99) in an article under the title ``What is Turkey doing in Cyprus'' says inter alia that ``Turkey is in Cyprus for her own safety reasons and nobody believes any more that the Turks are on the island for the beautiful eyes of the Turkish Cypriots''.

And the article continues: ``What does Turkey want in the final analysis? It is certain that she does not wish our international recognition nor an agreement with the Greek Cypriots for a common Republic, that is a solution of the problem. Then what does she want? Our union with her? If that is what she wants, then let them do it, so that we know how to proceed.'' (EF)

[06] Demirel says no going back in Cyprus

According to Anatolia Agency (20:27 hours, 7.7.99), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel has said that the Turkish side will not revert to the past regarding the Cyprus issue, adding: ``We cannot revert to the past. Let our brethren in Cyprus rest assured. We will come for the anniversary of the intervention. This is a national cause for us''.

At Esenboga Airport, Demirel met with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Demirel said: ``Yes, we shall not go back. We cannot revert to the past. Let our brethren in Cyprus rest assured. We are approaching the anniversary of the Cyprus intervention. As you must have observed, this is a national cause for us. There are martyrs and war veterans. There are those who are shedding tears. This is an epic story. You have played a great role in writing this epic. We fully concur with your efforts. We all have the same enthusiasm and the same feelings. This charateristic is an indication of Turkey“s greatness. The enthusiasm you have observed in one part of Turkey exists in other parts of the country as well. It is time to relax. Let us celebrate this intervention on 20 July.''

[07] Denktash returns from visit to Turkey, comments

According to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 8.7.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has declared that the answer to what is to be done with regard to the Cyprus issue from now on was given together with the Turkish Government. Denktash once again claimed that the existence of the pseudostate cannot be denied. Denktash, who concluded his visit to eastern Black Sea provinces in Turkey, returned to Cyprus via Istanbul the other night.

In a statement at the occupied Tymbou Airport, Denktash said that the Cyprus issue was discussed during his Black Sea tour, and that this allowed him to observe once again the excitement felt by the people in this region over the subject of Cyprus.

Denktash reported that in Trabzon, the last leg of his tour, he explained the latest situation in the Cyprus problem and its possible course in the future. Denktash went on: ``The answer to the question of what can be done with regard to the Cyprus problem is self-evident. This answer was given together with the Turkish Government. We cannot consent to the continuation of the old ploys and the denial of the existence of the TRNC under the guise of intercommunal negotiations. We will discuss this soon with the Turkish Government as well.''

Pointing out that on his way back he had the opportunity to meet with Turkish President Suleyman Demirel at the airport, Denktash reported Demirel“s statement to the press: ``Let no one have any doubts with regard to the future. The TRNC exists and it will continue to live and prosper.''

[08] TGNA set to adopt resolution supporting ``TRNC'' on 15 July.

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 8.7.99) the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) will adopt a new resolution supporting the pseudostate on 15 July. Rauf Denktash will also address the special TGNA session to be held on 15 July.

The TGNA Consultation Council comprising political party representatives will meet under the chairmanship of Yildirim Akbulut today, and it will propose to hold a session with a special agenda on 15 July. This will be put to a vote at the TGNA on 13 July. Under the program to be determined at the Consultative Council, Denktash and Turkish party leaders and representatives, as well as the Turkish prime minister or foreign minister will address the TGNA session. The speeches to be delivered at the plenum meeting will focus on the Turkish positions on the Cyprus issue and announce to the world Turkey“s solidarity with the Turkish Cypriots. An assembly resolution declaring the Turkish nation“s determination with regard to the Cyprus issue and supporting the ``TRNC'' will be adopted at the end of the session.

[09] Eroglu asks Turkic states“ help for ``TRNC'' recognition

According to Anatolia Agency (11:35 hours, 4.7.99) so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu has expressed his grief at the fact that the Turkic Republics, with the exception of Turkey, have not recognized the ``TRNC'' and has added:

``Stop thinking about what the world will say and accept us among yourselves.''

Speaking at the closing session of the 7th Turkic States and Communities Friendship, Brotherhood, and cooperation Congress, Eroglu said that much progress has been achieved since the first congress and that the level of cooperation among the Turkic Republics has started to show sizeable results in the economic, cultural, and political fields.

Referring to the current situation in Cyprus, Eroglu claimed that the G-8 and the United Nations ignored the Turkish Cypriots in their efforts to renew the peace process.

He further claimed: ``It is imperative to recognize the two separate states in Cyprus in order to maintain peace on the island''.

Indicating that the Turkish Cypriot side has certain conditions to initiate the peace process and that this process cannot start without preconditions, Eroglu asked the Turkic states and communities to support the Turkish Cypriot struggle. Stressing that the ``TRNC'' is in need of economic and political support, Eroglu continued:

``We want to share all the opportunities of the world. Cyprus has an economic potential, yet it can only be put to use with the support of the motherland. Our categorical reply to those who want to eliminate the TRNC from the international arena would be to improve our political and economic relations with the Turkic world.

From the start, we were pleased to participate in all the congresses. The flags of seven countries are represented here. It is sad that the Turkic Republics, with the exception of Turkey, have not recognized the TRNC. Stop thinking about what the world will say and accept us among yourselves. Recognize the TRNC not only at this congress but at all times and make sure that the world sees and understands this. We want to see our flag hoisted not only here but also in front of the United Nations. You are sufficiently independent and powerful to help us achieve this''.

Noting that the Turkish Cypriot side was pleased with the phrase ``the recognition of the TRNC'' which appeared in the final communique of the congress, Eroglu continued: ``Let the seven flags of the Turkic states be hosted in front of the United Nations. With the message of `one for all and all for one“ let us show the power of the Turkic World. I ask you to work for the recognition of this state which we founded with the blood of our martyrs.''

[10] Expert sees potential US-Turkey rift over Cyprus

According to Turkish Daily News (8.7.99), Alan Makovsky, one of the most acknowledged American experts on Turkey, remarked that Ankara“s and Washington“s policies on the Cyprus issue have never been so at odds in the past and warned that the present contradictions in policy could cause a rift in relations between Turkey and the United States.

Makovsky, a fellow at The Washington Institute think tank, told an Anatolia news agency reporter that the US Congress is engaged in hostile activities against Turkey.

``Congress is biased against Turkey. An anti-Turkish decision can be made at any time. They can ask the executive office to use all the means at its disposable to box Turkey into a corner'', Makovsky said.

Despite the fact that the Clinton administration favours a more moderate handling of the Cyprus issue, there is a gap between the approaches of Ankara and Washington. ``The worst is that the two governments act as if they do not know that this clash could lead to the severing of relations between them'', Makovsky was quoted as telling Anatolia.
