[01] Ertugruloglu: ``TRNC'' ready to start talks if recognized

Anatolia Agency (12:55 hours, 6.7.99) reports that Tahsin Ertugruloglu, the so-called foreign and defense minister, said on Tuesday that they are ready to start talks with the Greek Cypriot side in the level of ``two states''.

Addressing a press conference and upon recalled that Detlev Graf Zu Rantzau, the special envoy of Germany to Cyprus, stated that the decisions of the G- 8 countries set up the basis of the talks on Cyprus, not the resolutions of the Security Council, Ertugruloglu stressed that the Turkish Cypriots do not change their policy after the statements of Rantzau.

Evaluating the 26th Islamic Conference Organization (ICO) Foreign Ministers Meeting, Ertugruloglu said that the meeting was very useful in reaching their targets.

Pointing out that they got the support for their confederation proposal in this meeting, Ertugruloglu noted that the ``TRNC'' aims at becoming the permanent member of ICO.

[02] Denktash on importance of Turkish recognition of pseudostate

Anatolia Agency (13:12 hours 6.7.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Tuesday that recognition of the pseudostate by Turkey was above everything.

Denktash who continues his trip in Turkey´s Eastern Black Sea Region told reporters in Zitas Holiday Resort of Trabzon that ``it was not demoralizing for him to be recognized only by Turkey, but not by other countries.''

``If the whole world recognized me but not Turkey, that would have demoralized me'', he said. He added that for every single step the Greek Cypriots take towards Greece ``we are taking three steps towards Turkey''.

Upon a question about the US´s attitude toward the Cyprus issue, Denktash claimed there has been a very powerful Greek lobby in the US since 1955 and the US wanted to solve this problem ``by giving Cyprus to Greece.''

He said he will run in the ``presidential elections'' next year in April.

Denktash on Tuesday will speak at ``The situation of Cyprus and its future'' conference on Wednesday, in Rize. Denktash will later leave the region.

[03] Next Turkic Congress to be held in the occupied area

According to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 5.7.99), the final declaration of the 7th Turkic States and Communities Friendship, Brotherhood, and Cooperation Congress says that ``the delegates have agreed to hold next year´s convention at the TRNC''.

[04] Holbrooke allegedly seeks revenge from Denktash

All the local papers (7.7.99) report under banner headlines that once Richard Holbrooke assumes his new duties as the new US Permanent Representative at the UN, he will throw all his weight against Denktash so that ``he will revenge the failure of his Cyprus attempt last year''.

Quoting diplomatic sources in Washington, KIBRIS says that Holbrooke blames the failure of last year´s attempt on Rauf Denktash´s intransigence.

The same sources say that Holbrooke considers himself belittled by Denktash, and thus he wants to take revenge. Like Holbrooke, says the paper, US officials as well consider Denktash and not Turkey responsible for the failure of the Holbrooke initiative.

    [05] Irish parliamentarians hold contacts

KIBRIS (7.7.99) reports that the four member Irish parliamentary group which is currently illegally visiting the occupied area as the guest of the so-called assembly, had separate meetings yesterday with the so-called prime minister of the pseudostate Dervish Eroglu and the chairman of the so- called assembly Ertugrul Hasipoglu.

KIBRIS reports that the visiting deputies are: Evin Ryan and Sean Power (names as published) from the Fiana Fail Party (name as published), Denis Naughel and senator Liam Cosgrane from the Fine Cruel Party.

During the meetings, Eroglu and Hasipoglu repeated the known Turkish views claiming that there were two separate states in Cyprus.

[06] Bahceli: No settlement in Cyprus contrary to our wish and consent

According to KIBRIS (7.7.99), Turkish deputy prime minister and leader of the Nationalist Action Party Devlet Bahceli, speaking at his party´s parliamentary group, referred to the Cyprus problem and said that the issue has started occupying the first places on the international agenda.

Bahceli said that under Greece´s leadership, the work carried out by the anti-Turkish lobbies has created an international public opinion that is against Turkey.

Bahceli said: ``Turkey is continuously promoted as the side that does not wish for a settlement. However, the Turkish Republic has never deserved such criticism . Our country is against and will continue to be against such one-sided pressure and against the stance that considers the Turkish community an non-existent (in Cyprus).''

He said that Cyprus was a matter of honour and dignity for the Turks.

He went on and said: ``Everybody should know this well, that it is impossible to make Turkey accept a settlement or impose a settlement contrary to her wish and consent.'' (MY)
