[01] Turks of Cyprus and Albanians of Kosovo

The Turkish Daily News (1.5.99) publishes an article co-signed by Bulent Akarcali (president of the Turkish Democracy Foundation) and Kamil B. Raif (president of the Cyprus Turkish Development Platform.) which attempts to draw parallels with the situation in Yugoslavia.

The article claims that ``what the Serbians are trying to do now is an exact reflection of what the Greeks of Cyprus tried to do to the Turks of Cyprus in 1963 and the following years. The name of these inhuman actions is ethnic cleansing. The role of the Orthodox churches of Cyprus and Yugoslavia should not be ignored.''

Claiming that the 1960 Constitution envisaged a share of power on the basis of equality ``in the exercise of their separate rights to self- determination'', the article further claims that the Greek Cypriots resorted to violence in December 1963.

The authors then repeat the well-known accusations that the Greek Cypriots murdered or abducted Turkish Cypriots and that Turkey launched a ``peaceful operation'', in 1974 and concludes: ``NATO´s firm decision to protect the Albanians in Kosovo is similar to that of Turkey vis-a-vis Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus. Without Turkey´s interference in Cyprus, the Turkish population would have disappeared''.
