[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Ankara - Cyprus - KosovoAccording to the Turkish Daily News (3.5.99), a statement by the Turkish foreign Ministry said that Greek Cypriot efforts to make a comparison between the current tragedies in Kosovo and the events in Cyprus are a result of their feeling of isolation from the international community after they sided with the Serbian aggressors in Kosovo.``There is no possibility for the Greek Cypriot administration to change history by distorting facts'', the statement said. As a result of systematic attacks against Turkish Cypriots from 1955-58 and again from 1963-74 by Greek Cypriots who wanted to unite Cyprus with Greece, thousands of Turkish Cypriots were killed and tens of thousands more were displaced, the statement added. The 1974 intervention in Cyprus by the Turkish military brought peace to the island, the Foreign Ministry statement asserted. It went on to say that a 1975 agreement in Vienna to initiate population exchanges between the Turkish and Greek sectors of the island was carried out on a voluntary basis, contrary to Greek Cypriot claims that their people were forced to leave their homes. ``Due to their past experiences, Turkish Cypriots can easily understand the human tragedy currently being experienced in Kosovo, while the Greek Cypriot administration and its people have continued to support the Serbian ethnic cleansing policies'', the Foreign Ministry statement said. The statement urged the international community to take into consideration the Greek Cypriots´ ``fanatic attitude, which disregards humanitarian values''.
