[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash: "Greek Cypriots must first respect the TRNC"Rauf Denktash at a press conference in Istanbul on Monday before visiting his wife Aydin Denktash, in hospital for an operation, told reporters that he had not yet received an official invitation from the United Nations Secretary-General for a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides."We hope this meeting will be positive because Clerides is saying there is no common ground for talks, but for the sake of Turkey's application to the EU we have to respond to the invitation of the UN Secretary-General. For us there is a common ground, namely the series of ideas of former Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali" Denktash said. He pointed out that Turkey's guarantor rights would continue and were the basis of any agreement. He claimed that Greek Cypriots were trying "to cheat the world" and create problems for Turkey but "Turkish Cypriots would not play this game". Denktash said the Turkish Cypriot side was ready and willing for joint moves and projects with the Greek Cypriot side, provided these were held on an equal basis. Speaking to illegal TAK news agency, Denktash said the Greek Cypriot side should first respect the "TRNC", and get in contact with its relevant "authorities." He alleged Cyprus was not a unitary state and that in no way could the Greek Cypriot side represent Turkish Cypriots. "The balance that Turkey and Greece have imposed over Cyprus must be maintained," he said. Furthermore, according to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 2.6.97), in his written statement to illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency) on the issue of the Greek Cypriots preventing the Turkish folklore team from participating in intercommunal activities, Denktash said that he will "engage in propaganda in favour of any decision made in northern Cyprus as long as the Greek Cypriot side ignores the TRNC". Alleging that the "TRNC" has "constitution institutions, a "government", a "parliament", and "legislations", Denktash added: "The decisions are made and implemented by pertinent institutions. We are in favour of starting contacts for holding various joint activities under equal conditions and in line with human kindness should the Greek Cypriots realize these truths and initiate direct contacts with the pertinent authorities."
