[01] Onur Oymen on Cyprus: No ready-made solutions from outside

According to Turkish Daily News (31.5.97), the Undersecretary at the Turkish Foreign Ministry Ambassador Onur Oymen, while in Greece recently to attend a seminar on Turkish-Greek relations, in his address, inter alia, referred to the Cyprus problem and said:

"As far as Cyprus is concerned, we are of the opinion that full membership of Cyprus after a solution is reached together with Turkish membership to the European Union may pave the way for a better understanding, may ease the tensions and may consolidate a lasting peace on the island. For that matter the relevant articles of the 1960 London and Zurich Agreements should be fully observed.

We should not forget that in the past when Turkish-Greek relations were good, positive impact of these relations were observed in Cyprus. Whereas when Turkish-Greek relations deteriorated the negative effects were also seen in Cyprus.

We are of the opinion that there is today a window of opportunity in Cyprus. We believe that the personal characters and charisma of President Denktash and Clerides and chemistry between them are assets that we should not overlook. Nobody should expect them to yield under foreign pressure. Nobody in the world knows the Cyprus problem and solutions acceptable to both communities better than Denktash and Clerides. Therefore nobody should try to explain them the Cyprus problem or propose them ready-made solutions from the outside. Instead we should encourage them to come together and find ways and means to find a lasting, mutually acceptable, honourable solution to the Cyprus problem."

[02] Turkish book supposedly "asserts Turkishness of Cyprus"

According to YENI DEMOKRAT (3.6.97) Turkey's General Directorate of Archives has prepared a book named "Book of Records-Number 12" in which, the paper claims, the "Turkishness of Cyprus" is asserted.

The book was presented to Hakki Atun by the General Director of the Turkish Archives, Ismet Bimark.

Bimark said that upon the request of Denktash and Atun they carried out a research and prepared the book that "documents Cyprus' Turkishness".

[03] Pseudo-Assembly's session to discuss Cyprus problem postponed

According to ORTAM (3.6.97) the extraordinary session of the pseudo- Assembly scheduled to be held today, where the Cyprus problem was to be discussed, has been postponed.

ORTAM reports that Rauf Denktash was to attend the meeting.

Announcing the postponement Olgun Pasalar stated that the session was postponed to a future date because Mr. Denktash was in Istanbul where his wife is to undergo a neck operation.
