[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash disagrees with press and party leaders going to New York for the talksAccording to KIBRIS (5.6.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who was on a private visit to Istanbul, returned to the occupied area yesterday.Speaking to reporters at the occupied Tymbou airport, Denktash expressed opposition to party leaders going to New York for the direct talks. When asked "Clerides is taking with him all the party leaders, are you going to do the same"?, Denktash said: "If the press and party leaders go to New York, then us going there will have no meaning". He added that the New York talks were of a `sounding out' character and they were envisaged to be face to face talks. He repeated his view that any conciliation agreed upon by the leader will not be binding unless accepted through separate referenda by the two communities. He added: "The aim at the New York talks supposedly is to hold face to face meetings with Clerides. It is not possible to understand why the Greek Cypriot leadership does not trust Clerides. Most probably, what I will do in our Assembly, Clerides will do in their National Council or at the parliament. They will try to draw the boundaries of his negotiations; his power of flexibility and the parameters he will insist on. However, I think that going to New York will carry no meaning if the press and leadership go there as well."
