[01] ETKIN WARNS OF "POSSIBLE NEW CLASH" DUE TO ARMS SALES

Etkin sent a letter to Absa Claude Diallo, Senegal's permanent representative to the United Nations who also acts as the Disarmament Conference president.

Etkin called on the member countries of the conference to launch intense initiatives on the Greek Cypriot side to give up their armament program.

Etkin said that the Greek Cypriot side spent $2 million a day for their armament program and that the Turkish side supported the demilitarization of the island as proposed by the UN Set of ideas.

[02] GREEK-TURKISH FORUM STATEMENT URGES MORE COOPERATION

The statement said that the sides decided to have more cooperation and seek for cooperation facilities on very big infrastructure projects to evaluate opportunities within the direction of joint interests. The statement said that in the forum, the Turkish and Greek businessmen decided to launch initiatives to their governments to promote joint initiatives between the two countries, to provide the signing of an agreement to prevent double taxation, and for its implementation.

Other decisions taken during the meeting are as follows: "With the belief that the forum contributed to bilateral understanding between the Greek and Turkish businessmen, the forum stressed that more joint economic activities were required. With the idea that it would be suitable for cooperation on joint concrete projects, tourism and maritime transportation was primary fields for economic cooperation. The sides decided to form a committee to discuss cooperation facilities on the tourism field in a detailed way. Moreover, the sides decided to set up a special committee to carry out studies that will provide the two countries to submit joint projects to the EU. The sides also decided to hold the next meeting of the forum in Athens in October."

[03] MEMBER OF SUSURLUK COMMISSION LINKS GANG TO "OFF-SHORE" BANK IN THE OCCUPIED AREA

The member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Susurluk Commission, Fikri Saglar, has declared that there is an important connection between off-shore banks in the occupied area and the Susurluk incident in Turkey.

Fikri Saglar said that the "Susurluk Gang" was using the "First Merchant Bank" in the occupied area where Turkish Intelligence officer Tarik Umit, who was killed by gang leader Abdullah Catli, was a share holder.

During an accident in Susurluk, Western Turkey, gang leader Abdullah Catli and a senior police officer were killed and True Path Party deputy, tribal chieftain Bucak was wounded. With this accident, the Turkish state's cooperation with the underworld was revealed.

Catli was on the Interpol's list of wanted persons when he died travelling in the same car with the senior police officer. (MY)

[04] TURKISH, GREEK AND CYPRIOT BUSINESSMEN MEETING IN ISTANBUL

In the afternoon, stability in the region and the role of businessmen, the Black Sea region and a lasting solution to the problems between Turkey and Greece were the subjects of discussion.

The two-day meeting between members of the Turkish-Greek Business Council and the Greek Entrepreneurs Association is the third meeting between Turkish and Greek businessmen. The first which was attended by some 20 Greek businessmen was held in October in Istanbul and the second to which more than 50 Turkish businessmen went took place in Athens in December. Thirty-three Greek and four Greek Cypriot businessmen are attending the current meeting along with over 70 Turkish and nine Turkish Cypriot businessmen.

Thirty-five businessmen from Greece, Turkey, Greek Cyprus and Turkish Cyprus met in a whole-day session which was also closed to the press Sunday at the Ceylan Inter Continental Istanbul. The sessions were grouped around the following subjects: The role of businessmen and how much leverage they had; the contribution which the business world could make in cooperating and providing an atmosphere of security; the opportunities and possibilities for businessmen in the region and in particular the Balkans, the Middle East, Central Asia and a united Europe; and how could businessmen held in achieving political stability, security and increased commercial relations. At a press conference held afterwards, Turkish businessman Sarik Tara stressed that a decision had been taken to set up a committee which would examine a number of proposals for encouraging business relations and trade among all sides despite the political problems which exist.

The committee which may further set up subcommittees is expected to bring concrete proposals to a joint meeting to be held in Athens next fall. Alecos Michaelides, the chairman of the board of Thanos Hotels Ltd. and former foreign minister of the Republic of Cyprus, added that this may be a first step but an important one. The ideas which were proposed at Sunday's meeting addressed the question of how to facilitate a climate which would permit a solution to the Cyprus problem which has divided the island into two parts. Tara reminded the press that businessmen could put pressure on their governments and on bureaucrats but to affect change meant that more people had to be involved. In particular he asked for assistance from the press to support the businessmen's efforts.

Moreover, HALKIN SESI (28/5/97) says that Eroglu will "explain" to the Turkish businessmen the situation in Cyprus. (MY)
