[01] DENKTASH SAYS BRINGING S-300 MISSILES WILL SEVER TALKS

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1030 hours, 28/5/97) Rauf Denktash has alleged that the talks between the two communities in Cyprus will be severed if the Cyprus Government brings parts parts of the S-300 missiles or the missiles themselves to the island.

Denktash met with Gustave Feissel, the UN Secretary-General's asistant special envoy for Cyprus, and conferred with him for some time yesterday. Denktash explained that Feissel told him that he determined in his fact- find that the S-300 parts were not brought to the island, and added that Feissel also promised him that he will continue his study of the issue. Noting that at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly the Cyprus Government referred to the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" as Greek Cypriot territory under Turkish occupation, and continued to draw up reports on any human rights incident as being the responsibility of Turkey, Denktash claimed: "Such behavior is trying the limits of our patience."

Stressing that he told Feissel that the Turkish Cypriots will no longer be able to tolerate the Greek Cypriots' complete disregard, as he put it, of the UN Secretary General's goodwill mission and its "hiding" of the fact that work was under way on missing persons by an independent and neutral committee, Denktash added that the Cyprus Government should realize the truth so that an agreement can be reached.

In reply to a question, Denktash said that he had not yet received an invitation from the UN Secretary General with regard to the face-to-face meeting with President Glafcos Clerides. Denktash gave Feissel a book on his speeches at the United Nations and a photograph album.
