[01] TURKS ASK UN TO EXAMINE REPORTS ON DELIVERY OF S-300 PARTS

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (10:30 hours, 26.5.97), the pseudostate has informed the United Nations about the reports that the Greek Cypriots have brought parts of the S-300 missiles to the island, and asked it to investigate the issue.

Rauf Denktash, "prime minister" Dervis Eroglu, and Serdar Denktash, "state minister and deputy prime minister", met yesterday morning for their routine weekly meeting. In a statement after the 30 minute meeting, Eroglu said that they mainly discussed economic and foreign policy issues. He noted that even though the reports about the delivery of S-300 missile parts to the island have not been confirmed yet, the issue was raised with Gustave Feissel, the UN Secretary General's assistant special envoy in Cyprus, who was asked to investigate the matter.

[02] KENAN EVREN OPPOSES RAPPROCHEMENT OF THE TWO COMMUNITIES IN CYPRUS

According to KIBRIS (27.5.97) the leader of the 12 September 1980 coup in Turkey, retired general Kenan Evren, who is currently in the occupied area as the guest of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, opposing the idea of the coming together of the two communities, has alleged that "the coming together of the two communities will be like returning to the past".

Speaking prior to a meeting with Hakki Atun, the so-called Assembly chairman of the pseudo state, Kenan Evren strongly criticised the USA, Britain, and other countries' involvement in the Cyprus problem. "They spoiled the broth" alleged Evren.

In his turn, Atun welcomed Evren and said that regarding the Cyprus problem the Turkish nation is acting in unity and that the Turkish Cypriots, besides acting in line with their own rights and interests, are also acting in the name of Turkism. (MY)

[03] ANTIQUES SMUGGLING IN THE OCCUPIED AREA

According to KIBRIS (27.5.97), following a tip off that antiques smuggling is being carried out in the occupied villages of Trikomo, Gastria and Spathariko, Denktash's "police" carried out raids and confiscated 54 antique earthenware jugs, pitchers and earthen pots of different sizes and shapes.

The paper says that "police" have arrested four mainland Turks.

The total value of the antique goods confiscated, says the paper, is about one billion 141 million TL (one Cyprus pound equals approximately 250 thousand TL).

In order to facilitate the investigation, Denktash's "court" issued a three days remand order for the four Turks. (MY)

[04] GERMAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA IN THE OCCUPIED AREA

According to KIBRIS (27.5.97) the 65-member Bavarian Youth Orchestra arrived in the occupied area last Tuesday.

The Orchestra will stay until 1st June and during its stay it will give two performances, one at the occupied Bellapais Abbey on 28 May and the second on 29 May at the occupied Famagusta Othello Castle. (MY)

[05] RAHMI KOC SPEAKS OF "TWO COUNTRIES, A SINGLE ECONOMY"

According to KIBRIS (27.5.97) the chairman of the Turkish-Greek Business Council, Rahmi Koc, has said that "in the Greek Cypriot sector" labour wages are high and if people from the occupied area go and work there both sides will be satisfied.

Answering questions put to him by journalists within the framework of the 3rd Greco-Turkish Forum meetings held in Istanbul, Koc said that "these meetings will eventually bring about a settlement to the Cyprus problem, though it will take time".

He said that they are working on the issue of "two countries, a single economy. At the beginning we are taking this as the sole target. After that the countries can become a single one. As is the case in Hong Kong". (MY)

    [06] DENKTASH MEETS GERMAN MP

According to KIBRIS (27.5.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had a meeting yesterday with the German MP Manfred Suclt of the Greens party. (MY)

[07] PRIVATE TV CHANNEL STARTS BROADCASTING

According to KIBRIS (27.5.97) the private TV channel "KIBRIS Genc TV", member of the "Birinci Media Association" in the occupied area, will start broadcasting on 31st May. It will broadcast everyday from UHF-59. (MY)
