[01] President Clinton's bimonthly report to Congress states no progress on Cyprus

In a letter dated 18 November, accompanying President Clinton's bimonthly report on Cyprus to Congress, US President notes that "US efforts to bring about a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus issue based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation remained steadfast". Moreover it is stated that the US "encouraged the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leadership to focus on the are issues of the Cyprus dispute and encouraged all parties to prepare for eventual comprehensive negotiations".

President Clinton's report covers events during June and July 1998.

[02] Violations of Cyprus airspace by Turkish military aircraft

The Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos has strongly protested to the UN against new violations of the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus and of the flight information region of Nicosia by a large number of Turkish military aircraft, recorded on different occasions on 11, 12 and 13 November.

In a letter dated 17 Nonember 1998 addressed to the United Nations Secretary General, the Cyprus Ambassador stressed that these provocative Turkish acts against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus are a further reminder of Turkey's offensive disregard of international law, the UN Charter and the relevant UN decisions on Cyprus.

Mr Zackheos also stated that such unauthorised intrusions do not only violate international air traffic rules but at the same time increase tension on the island and undermine efforts towards achieving a final settlement.

The letter circulated as a documents of the General Assembly and the Security Council.
