[01] President flies to London and Athens

President Glafcos Clerides flew to London last night where he will address a conference organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry aimed at promoting Cypriot exports.

He is accompanied by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis.

From London he will then fly to Athens on 27 November where he well meet with the Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, and will give a speech at the University of Patra.

Replying to questions, the President said that while in London he would also be meeting with Sir David Hannay.

[02] Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister in Cyprus

The prospects of expanding bilateral relations between Cyprus and Cuba were examined last week by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and visiting Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister, Isabel Allende.

Mr Kasoulides referred to Cuba's "solid friendship that has been expressed in international fora in several ways," and "in particular when violations of international law take place."

On her part, Ms Allende said "Cuba and Cyprus have all the possibilities to continue the development of their bilateral relations which are from the political point of view excellent", and which can also be "excellent from the economic and commercial point of view."

Ms Allende said the two countries "have many opportunities to diversify" their relations and expressed the Cuban government's gratitude for the solidarity which the Cyprus government has shown over the years "in the Cuban struggle against the American blockade."

The Cuban Deputy FM, who was in Cyprus on a three-day official visit and left yesterday, was also received by the President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou.

[03] Government wants Cyprus to become a business and IT centre

The government has decided to finance its programme of turning the island into an international business and information-technology centre with 21,6 million Cyprus pounds.

In order to achieve this goal, the government announced last week its decision to set up two working teams which will operate under the presidency of the state Planning Bureau.

The first team, with a budget of 11,1 million pounds, will be responsible for promoting Cyprus' role as an international business hub.

The second team, which will try to establish the island as an information- technology centre, will have a slightly lower budget of 10,5 million pounds.

The programme is not aiming at replacing the private sector's efforts to achieve the two goals, but only to support them, a statement said.

The government calls on Cypriot businesses to seek strategic alliances with companies in Greece, Europe and the Middle East, in an effort to promote "the specialisation and internationalisation of their activities".

Cyprus must use its comparative advantages in the services sectors in order to secure its economic development, the statement adds.
