[01] EU enlargement process can only be completed with Cyprus' entry

Greek Parliament Speaker Apostolos Kaklamanis expressed certainty yesterday that any problems in Cyprus' EU accession will be overcome adding that the enlargement process can only be completed with Cyprus' entry.

Speaking after a meeting with President Clerides, Mr Kaklamanis said that he also conveyed to the President of the Republic a message of solidarity from the Greek Premier Costas Simitis. He described the message as one of "common struggle and solidarity" for a settlement to the Cyprus problem and the rest¦ration of a unified and undivided island.

Commenting on the Republic's EU course, the Greek Speaker stressed that Cyprus' accession is a prerequisite for the whole EU enlargement process. Moreover he noted that Cyprus is at the top of the list of all candidate countries since it fulfills nearly all conditions for its accession.

[02] Cyprus desires a peaceful future, says UN Chief of Mission

United Nations Chief of Mission, Dame Ann Hercus said yesterday that she believes the vast majority of the people of Cyprus do want peace in their country.

Speaking at the Lions Club, Dame Ann, described her job as UN Deputy Special Representative as a "bridge, a door, a window of opportunity. Anywhere in the world it has to be the role of the impartial mediator or bridge builder to explore ideas and options", she pointed out.

Referring to longstanding conflicts, Dame Ann, reminded that "history shows that in the end, they can be solved" and mentioned the recent examples of Ireland and South Africa. "The compromise reached in the Northern ˆreland agreement reflects the deeply felt convictions of the vast majority of the people. I do believe that the same desire for a peaceful future exists on this island", she concluded.
