[01] Declaration of pseudostate condemned

Political parties, refugee and youth organisations, in Cyprus and abroad yesterday held a series of protests against the illegal declaration 15 years ago of the Turkish Cypriot pseudostate in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island.

UN Security Council resolution 541 (1983) "considers the declaration as illegally invalid and calls for its withdrawal," and "calls upon all states not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus". No country other than Turkey has ever recognised it.

President Clerides in a speech to mark the anniversary said that "the international community does not tire of repeating to the Turkish side that it does not recognise the status quo of Cyprus including the so-called 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus."

He recalled that the international community insists on the need to find a federal solution to the Cyprus problem through peaceful means, something with which the Cyprus government is in absolute agreement.

"However, it has been proved that our own sincerity and goodwill are not enough to solve the Cyprus problem on the basis of federation", he added and stressed the need for the international community to exert pressure on the Turkish side to radically change its policy and intentions. He said that unless this is fully understood then the Turkish side is bound to cause the failure of the current UN effort to solve the Cyrpus problem.

"Should the Turkish side finally torpedo this effort too, the only option that will be left is for the UN Security Council to take against Turkey the measures envisaged in the UN Charter",he added.

Moreover, the President of the Greek Parliament , Mr Apostolos Kaklamanis, addressing an anti-occupation gathering in Nicosia yesterday, said that despite the fact that the international community not only acknowledged this blatant international illegality and unanimously condemned Turkey's efforts to partition the island, yet it has not however shown any willingness to enforce its own resolutions on Cyprus.

[02] Foreign Minister meets EU official

Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had a meeting last week with the EU Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, Mrs Annita Gradin.

The issues they discussed included ways of combatting organised crime, uncontrolled emigration, asylum issues, and money laundering issues.
