[01] Clerides says Non-Aligned resolution on Cyprus is a strong one

President Glafcos Clerides returned to the island on Saturday saying the Non-Aligned Movement's (NAM) resolution on Cyprus is a strong one, and supports the Greek-Cypriot position.

"It refers to all aspects of the Cyprus problem and supports our positions", he said.

President Clerides added that the contacts he had had in Durban had proved there was strong interest in Cyprus on the part of the NAM and strong support for the island's case.

Replying to journalists' questions, President Clerides said that the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was working on "certain ideas" for Cyprus which he would discuss further with him when he goes to New York to address the UN General Assembly meeting at the end of this month.

Referring to his talks with Mr Annan, President Clerides said they had discussed, among other things, demilitarisation, the reduction of armaments in Cyprus and the essence of the Cyprus problem.

He added that Mr Annan had also reiterated the UN's rejection of recent proposals by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash for a confederal solution in Cyprus.

[02] Cypriot Deputies attend IPU conference

An all-party delegation from the House of Representatives flew to Moscow on Saturday to attend the 100th Conference of the Interparliamentary Union (IPU).

The five-member delegation consisting of Nicos Anastasiades, Doros Theodorou, Andreas Filippou, Stathis Kittis and Androulla Vasiliou, will participate in discussions of the Socialdemocratic and Non-Aligned groups and brief the IPU Monitoring Committee on Cyprus about the latest developments.

The conference will deal with the political, economic and social world situation, the action that needs to be taken this year on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights and the management of water resources.
