[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - MORPHOU MARCHThere can be no solution to the Cyprus problem without the return of Morphou under Greek Cypriot administration, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias pointed out on Sunday.Addressing a gathering in the context of Morphou anti-occupation events, the President said the Greek Cypriot side always believed that the solution of the Cyprus problem would come after a creative approach by both sides, adding that he expected the international community to address those who obstruct the solution process. President Christofias recalled the three-point proposal he submitted recently aiming at expediting the ongoing UN-led talks, which began in 2008 for a mutually agreed solution of the Cyprus problem. He specifically referred to his proposal for a parallel discussion of the chapters of property and territory and the issue of settlers, noting that this proposal is ``directly related to Morphou and the need for its return under Greek Cypriot administration.`` ``Without the return of Morphou there cannot be a solution of the Cyprus problem,`` he pointed out. The President added that the Greek Cypriot side desires the increase of the territories to be returned under Greek Cypriot administration in case of a settlement, apart from those provided for in the Annan Plan, rejected by the Greek Cypriots and approved by the Turkish Cypriots in 2004. ``The return of a large majority of the Greek Cypriots under Greek Cypriot occupation would render the chapter of property less complex and its solution easier,`` President Christofias added. He also referred to the proposals of the Turkish Cypriot side on property, pointing out that they are presented in an impressive way, but the their essence is that they lead to the obligatory compensation of a large majority of the owners of property in the Turkish occupied areas, the exchange of properties by a smaller extent and to an even lesser restoration of properties. ``This is a philosophy that cannot be accepted and which contradicts the human rights of the Cypriot citizens,`` he added. President Christofias also noted that the Turkish proposals are not in line with the principle of one state with a single sovereignty, nationality and international personality. ``We once again call on the Turkish Cypriot leadership and Turkey, if they want a solution by the end of the year, as they claim, to alter their approach,`` he added, noting that ``it is no coincidence that we appeal to Turkey, which remains the key to a settlement of the Cyprus problem.`` He also said that ``the Cyprus problem would be solved with creative proposals from both sides on the negotiating table.`` ``This has been the stance of our side so far. We expect that the international community will not be fooled by grand words and impressive packaging (of the Turkish Cypriot proposals) but will see the substance and will address with determination those who obstruct the course towards a solution,`` he concluded. [02] NIKIFOROS - CANCELLEDCypriot Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas said on Saturday that the annual National Guard military exercise ``Nikiforos`` is cancelled, irrespective of what the Turkish occupying forces would decide regarding the military exercise ``Toros``.Speaking to the press, Papacostas recalled that President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, addressing the UN General Assembly, called for the cancellation of both Nikoforos and Toros. He noted that he gave the order for the cessation of the preparations, adding that the cancellation of the exercise does affect the operational capability of the National Guard. Asked whether Nikiforos is cancelled irrespective of the decision of the Turkish forces regarding Toros, Papacostas said Toros is conducted after Nikiforos, adding that ``what Turkey is going to do is up to them.`` Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
