Haiti still projects a hopeless and disheartening image, eight months
after the devastating earthquake of January 12, Volunteer
Doctors-Cyprus organisation say.
Speaking at a press conference after the completion of the
organisation`s second visit to the earthquake-ravaged state on
September 27, Cypriot MP and pediatrician Stella Mishiaouli said she
diagnosed an epidemic of psychological degeneration, while Katia
Christodoulou, the organisation`s treasurer, presented the media with
clay biscuits with which the inhabitants of the country deceive their
hunger when they are short of food.
``As soon as we reached Haiti we were met by a discouraging image with
the roads filled with debris, a transportation chaos, a suffocating
sewage smell and about two million people practically pilled in tents
with non-existent hygiene conditions, waiting for food and drinkable
water from the UN,`` Olga Sophocleous, Secretary of the Organisation
said.
The mission provided medical equipment allowing for proper examination
and diagnosis such as a cardiograph, a monitor and stethoscopes,
machinery that could equip a dentist`s surgery, machinery for a full
microbiological laboratory, medical aid, as well as medical treatment
for orphans.
