[01] GAROYIAN - MORPHOU
President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian said on
Sunday the Turkish attitude allowed no optimism for the course of the
UN-led talks for a mutually agreed solution to the Cyprus problem.
Speaking at a gathering in the context of Morphou anti-occupation
events, Garoyian accused the Turkish side of promoting a two-state
solution for the Cyprus problem and submitting proposals that revealed
the lack of will for a just, functional and viable solution in Cyprus,
divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, which resulted in the
occupation of 37 per cent of the island`s territory.
``With its proposals and its broader stance, Turkey undermines the
process of the direct talks,`` Garoyian said, adding that if the
international community does not exert influence over Turkey ``they
will be credited with one more failure for the solution of the Cyprus
problem.``
Garoyian made clear that the solution of the Cyprus problem would be a
compromise, pointing out however that this compromise should be mutual
and just. ``We must stress at the same time in every direction that our
good will, as well as our patience, have limits. When our good will and
intentions for a reasonable and fair compromise are met with no
response, we will change tactics,`` he said, noting that ``it is time
for a new strategy that will put Turkey on the stand.``
