[01] BUILDING PERMITS DECREASED

The total value of these permits reached 225,5 million euros and the total area 254,8 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 1191 dwelling units.

During the period January May 2009, 3.697 building permits were issued, registering an increase of 5.0% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The total value of these permits decreased by 1.1% and the total area decreased by 9.5%. ิhe number of dwelling units recorded a decrease of 10,1%.

Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector in Cyprus.

[02] URBAN FIRES - DECREASED

The fire services sent on Tuesday a plea to the public to help prevent the outbreak of fires, especially over the busy holiday weekend.

Speaking at a press conference, Director of Cyprus Fire Department Andreas Nicolaou said that latest figures indicate the Fire Department responded from 1 January 2009 to 31 July 2009 to 3,403 fires of which 1,738 were in urban areas, while 1,665 in rural areas.

As regards rural fires, Nicolaou noted that a total of 2,768 were recorded in 2008, while during the seven first months of 2009, 1,665 rural fires were recorded.
