    The Spanish Frigate NUMANCIA will dock at Larnaca Port on Saturday, 15 August, following an invitation extended by Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas to his Spanish counterpart Carme Chacon Piqueras.

    The National Guard Philharmonic and the Cyprus Navy Command will hold a docking ceremony to welcome the frigate, a Defence Ministry statement said.

    The Spanish frigate has been participating in the EU operation EUNAVFOR ATALANTA which operation is being held after an EU decision to support UN resolution 1816 concerning the combating of piracy off Somalia`s coast.

    Cyprus participates in the operation with two officers who are stationed in the Standing Headquarters of the EU operation EUNAVFOR - ATALANTA.

    On Sunday, 16 August, the ESPS CANARIAS frigate, which will subsequently replace NUMANCIA at the ATALANTA operation, will dock at Larnaca Port. The two warships will set sail late Sunday.

    [02] OEB PRESIDENT - INTERVIEW

    Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) President Andreas Pittas stressed that the implementation of the acquis communautaire, the existence of a single Central Bank and the adoption of Euro as the single currency throughout Cyprus, should be considered as prerequisites as far as the economic aspects of a solution to the Cyprus question is concerned.

    In an interview to CNA on the occasion of the Federations donation towards restoring two religious sites, a Greek Orthodox church in northern Turkish occupied Cyprus and a mosque in the southern coastal town of Limassol, Pittas said that the decision was agreed with the respective Turkish Cypriot organization (ISAD).

    [03] GDP GROWTH RATE - SECOND QUARTER OF 2009

    Cyprus GDP growth rate in the second quarter of 2009 is negative and estimated at -1.0% over the corresponding quarter of 2008, according to the Flash Estimate compiled by the Statistical Service of the Republic.

    It said the GDP growth rate in real terms during the second quarter of 2009 is negative and estimated at -1,0% over the corresponding quarter of 2008. Based on seasonally and working day adjusted data, the GDP growth rate in real terms is estimated at -0.7%.
