Russias position on the Cyprus question remains unchanged, a press release issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry has said, expressing satisfaction over the completion of the first round of direct talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus.

The position of the Russian Federation regarding the settlement of the Cyprus problem remains unchanged: we are in favour of the implementation of the UN Security Council relevant resolutions, against unilateral actions and efforts from outside to impose any formulas or deadlines for a settlement, the press release issued by the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

It added that Ministry officials have noted with satisfaction the results of the first round of talks. Cyprus has been divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

The Foreign Ministry said that despite the fact that the two sides have to overcome many substantive disagreements, it is an important fact that the first reading of all six chapters of the negotiating package, during which mutual understanding in all series of difficult issues was achieved, has been completed.

Both the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and the Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, especially during his visit to Ankara, have repeatedly underlined that the settlement of the conflict is possible only through the achievement of agreements between the sides themselves, with the support of the international community, consideration of the positions of each side, respect for the agreed negotiating and peace-making mechanisms, the Foreign Ministry added.

It also noted that with all the aforementioned as a starting point we will continue to contribute to the achievement of an overall and viable settlement of the Cyprus question.

Christofias and Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008. The first phase of the talks was concluded this month and the second round will begin on September 3, 2009.
