[01] NEW ZEALANDs PM - CYPRUS - EUThe role of Cyprus in the EU and how this can help New Zealand, was underlined by its Prime minister Helen Clark.In statements to CNA, Clark, who is in Kampala for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, also praised the role and significance of the Commonwealth. ``The Commonwealth is setting good standards for good government, the rule of law, human rights and democracy... The Commonwealth uses its good offices to put them back on a proper path``, she said. The Commonwealth, she added, offers advices to small countries how to organise parliaments while in the development area it has done a lot with technical workshops and supports the whole development process. ``So from the point of view of New Zealand and Cyprus, which are developing countries, it is important to be members and be supportive and participate and fund things which will make a difference to other countries``, the New Zealand Prime Minister told CNA. Another point is that both Commonwealth members, Cyprus and Malta, are now in the European Union. ``It is very important for us to keep those relations as Brussels takes a lot of decisions with respect to trade, and access to European markets which affect New Zealand. So we need friends in Brussels. Commonwealth friends are good friends``, she said. Furthermore, New Zealand`s relations with the EU are developing in a lot of directions, ``and there are many projects underway, education, science collaboration, dialogue for the big international issues`` and other, she added. [02] CYPRIOT MPs - BRUSSELSCyprus Parliamentary Interior Commitee Acting Chairman Kypros Chrysostomides leaves for Brussels to participate in a meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee to be held on 26-27 November.The meeting, jointly organized by the European and the Portuguese Parliaments (Portugal holds the current EU presidency) will discuss ``The future of the European Union as a place of Freedom, Security and Justice``, a Cyprus House press release said. The parliamentarians will focus on issues such as the European Immigration Policy, the role of Parliaments in combatting terrorism, exchange of information for security reasons and prospects and restrictions of the European and national penal legislations. A second Cypriot MP Dinos Hadjinicolas also heads for Brussels to take part in a meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly Political Affairs, Security and Human Rights Committee. The parliamentarians will exchange views on topics such as death penalty, the situation in the Middle East and Lebanon, and review the implementation of the code of combatting terrorism.
