Government mobilised after Sharm el-Sheikh bus crash

Nicosia, Aug 19 (CNA) Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has given instructions to all services to mobilise fully, following a bus crash in Egypt, in which seven Cypriot tourists were killed.

An Egyptian airliner is on its way to the area, carrying relatives of the victims.

Director of the President's Press Office Marios Karoyan said that Papadopoulos was briefed about the incident and ordered a full mobilization of government services.

According to Reuters, medical and police officials on the Sinai peninsula said a burst tyre sent the tourist minibus tumbling down a mountain road from St. Catherine's monastery towards the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

''There are seven dead. The minibus was carrying a group of 13 people and as far as we know that they are all Cypriots,'' Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said tonight, adding that the Foreign Ministry had been informed about the incident by Interpol and the Cyprus Police.

He said this was yet another tragedy Cyprus has to deal with after the air crash of an ''Helios Airways'' plane on Sunday, near Athens, which killed all 121 passengers and crew on board.

Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order Doros Theodorou told CNA that three children are the only survivors of a family of seven. They are in a serious but stable condition, he added.
