The medal was handed on the occasion of the International UN peacekeeper's Day (May 29), during a ceremony in Dag Hammerskjold Library, where 115 peacekeepers from 39 countries, who fell in the cause of peace, were honoured. Left-wing AKEL party spokesman Andros Kyprianou said that the Cyprus problem will be the main issue to be discussed at the conference, adding that among the speakers will be representatives from Turkey's Kurdish Party (DEHAP) and Turkish Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP). Kyprianou said that members of the GUE/NGL European Parliament Group, including its president Francis Vurtz, will hold a four-day visit to Cyprus, May 30 to June 2, during which they will be received by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, they will meet with trade union PEO and with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot youth. He noted that the Greek Cypriot side has fulfilled its duty and presented thoroughly its positions, as it was asked to do. Referring to UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast's forthcoming visit to the region, Christofias noted that the UN contacts on Cyprus are exploratory. Christofias noted that ''we expect the UN to evaluate things, with the wish that a new initiative will begin,'', adding that the Greek Cypriot side has reiterated many times its views regarding the basis on which the negotiations should resume.
