    Cyprus President assures G/C over property ruling

    Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos assured on Wednesday that the government will not leave Greek Cypriot refugees exposed, following last weeks decision of the Supreme Court demanding the return of the property of a Turkish Cypriot applicant in Episkopi.

    Larnaca, Sep 30 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos described as satisfactory his two-day working visit to Brussels where, he said the positions of the government were understood.

    On the political agreement, achieved yesterday in Brussels concerning the regulation for financial aid to Turkish Cypriots, President Papadopoulos said a great effort was made by the government to overcome the damaging provisions of the original proposal.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 01/10/2004 to 02/10/2004

    On Friday the weather will be finew and mostly clear. Variable light to gentle winds will be blowing during the morning, while moderate sea breezes will prevail in the afternoon. Light to gentle northwesterly to northeasterly winds will be blowing overnight. The state of sea will be generally slight. Maximum temperature 37C inland, 30-31C over the East and South coasts and 28-29C over the west, northwest coasts as well as over Prodromow. Minimum temperature around 17-18C in general.

    On Saturday initially the weather will be mainly fine, but in the afternoon cloud will develop locally, with a chance of isolated showers over the mountains. The rest of the weather, winds and sea state conditions, will be similar to Friday's. Maximum temperature 35C inland, 30-31C over the east and south coasts, 28C over the west and northwest coasts and 24-25C over Prodromos. Minimum temperature 16C inland, 17-18C over the coasts and 13-14C over Prodromow.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 03/10/2004 to 04/10/2004 ----------------------------------------------------- Similar weather conditions to Saturday, with a further small drom in maximum temperature expected.

    CNA honours staff with 20 years service

    Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) - The Cyprus News Agency Board of Directors honoured three of its staff today, who have been with the Agency for twenty continuous and fruitful years, namely Editor-in-Chief George Penintaex and News Secretaries Marianna Mela and AnnaMaria Charalambous.

    All three had been employed by CNA in 1984, Penintaex as a reporter and Mela and Charalambous as secretaries-typists-telex operators, in the framework of a Council of Ministers decision to intensify the Agency's contribution to the awareness campaign regarding the Cyprus problem.

    UN chief recommends renewal of UNFICYP mandate with reductions

    Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan recommends to the Security Council that the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) be renewed for a further six months, starting in mid December 2004, with a simultaneous reduction of its military component but at the same time maintaining the same level of mandate implementation, with a more efficient use of resources.

    Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) - President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos called the people of Cyprus to unity and collective efforts in the common peaceful struggle for a happier future on the island, assuring that better days would come for the people, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

    In a declaration tonight for the 44th anniversary of Cyprus' independence, President Papadopoulos said the island's accession to the EU offered ''an additional security framework and potential to promote the principles that should apply in a Cyprus settlement'' but noted that it did not make void the UN framework, in which every effort and initiative for a Cyprus settlement should be promoted and expressed.

    Latvia will work with Cyprus in EU, new Ambassador says

    Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) - Latvia and Cyprus will work together to strengthen the project that brings the peoples of Europe together in peace and prosperity but in doing so cannot build a fortress against the rest of the world, but must seek to engage their neighbours to bring them closer to the values that are a source of their own well-being, the new Ambassador of Latvia to Cyprus, stationed in Athens, Janis Eichmanis said today, presenting his credentials to President Papadopoulos.
