    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- Dutch Minister for European Affairs Atzo Nicolai, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, arrives here today for a three-day official visit.

    UN team in Cyprus to review UNFICYP's mandate

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- A UN team of experts is currently in Cyprus in order to conduct a review of UNFICYPs (UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) mandate, force levels and concept of operations, as called for by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in his report of 26 May 2004.

    According to an UNFICYP press release, the four-member team, began work yesterday morning at UNFICYP headquarters in Nicosia. The team will meet with representatives of the two sides in the course of the week.

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- The Bank of Cyprus Group has said its profitability for the first half of 2004 continued its significant increase and the group profit after tax reached 16,2 m. Cyprus pounds (27,9mn), recording a 90% increase compared to the corresponding half of 2003.

    Foreign diplomats to attend religious rites at St. Mamas Church

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- Several foreign diplomats serving in Cyprus have announced their decision to attend the religious rites to be held 1 and 2 September at St. Mamas Church in teh Turkish-occupied town of Morphou, a press release issued by the Morphou Movement for Solution and Reunification said.

    On 1 September, the Ambassador of Ireland with his spouse, the UN High Commissioner and the Ambassador of Spain will attend a vespers at the occupied church.

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- The presence of the UN peace keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) as defined by the Security Council remains necessary, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has stated.

    Replying to a question on UNFICYP's obligations regarding a scheduled mass at Ayios Mamas church in Turkish-occupied Morphou in celebration of the saints name day on 1-2 September, the Spokesman said it is a fact that should be taken in consideration by the UN team of technocrats visiting Cyprus to conduct a review of UNFICYPs mandate, force levels and concept of operations, as called for by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in his report of 26 May 2004.

    Government seeks security guarantees from UNFICYP for pilgrims

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- The government of Cyprus has asked the UN peacekeeping force on the island (UNFICYP) to evaluate the Greek Cypriot pilgrims conditions of safety during their trip to the Turkish- occupied town of Morphou tomorrow and inform the government whether it can guarantee their security.

    Overseas Cypriots briefed over enlightenment efforts

    Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) Overseas Cypriots were briefed here today on the government's enlightenment efforts following the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.

    Delegates participating at the central councils of the 20th Annual Meeting of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) and the Second International Conference of Cyprus Youth Overseas (NEPOMAK), were informed during today's session by Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides over the challenges Cyprus is expected to face in the coming months.

    In his address Presidential Commissioner Polakis Sarris spoke on the reopening of the Gymnasium of Rizokarpaso in the Turkish occupied Karpass peninsula while representative of the Pancyprian Committee of the Relatives of the Missing Persons, Nicos Sergides referred to developments on the humanitarian issue.
