    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- Athens has welcomed a package of measures Nicosia announced last week to facilitate trade between the island's two communities and in particular the Turkish Cypriots.

    Turkish forces fire at illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- Turkish occupation forces have fired against two illegal immigrants who were trying to cross from the northern occupied part of Cyprus to the southern government-controlled part of the island.

    One of them is in Larnaca General Hospital, on the south coast, recovering from a leg injury, the other is detained by the police of British Bases, which border the ceasefire line the immigrants were trying to cross.

    Both were arrested last night by the Bases police in their attempt to escape the firing from the Turkish forces.

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- Yiannakis Skordis, Mayor of the Turkish-occupied town of Famagusta, on the island's eastern coast, announced an anti occupation event to denounce the thirty years since the coastal towns occupation by the Turkish invasion forces.

    G/C refugees send petition to UN Secretary-General

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) --- Greek Cypriot refugees from the Turkish-occupied municipalities of Lapithos and Karavas in the Kyrenia district, sent a petition to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in which they underline that the people of Cyprus are entitled to a new opportunity for a just and final settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    Nicosia, Aug 02 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 3/8/2004 to 4/8/2004 ---------------------- Fine with local cloud. Risk of isolated showers, mainly over mountains in the afternoon. Winds will be moderate sea breezes and the state of sea slight to moderate.

    Maximum temperature around 35C inland, 32C over the south coastal areas and 29C over west coastal areas.

    Minimum temperature around 21C inland and over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 5/8/2004 to 6/8/2004 ------------------------------- Fine and mostly clear. Small increase in temperature is expected.
